Open Chromebook Settings to install Linux. Select Linux (Beta) and then turn on the Linux Pane. Select Next, enter an account name, then click Install.
Download the Debian/Ubuntu Minecraft.deb File. It can be saved to Linux files under My Files. Double-click Minecraft.deb and select Install.
- After the installation is complete then start the App Drawer then go to the Linux folder, and select Minecraft Launcher to launch the game.
This article explains how you can play Minecraft on a Chromebook by installing the Linux virtual machine. It also includes information about how to play Minecraft on the Chromebook and how to optimize Minecraft settings for Chromebook.
How to Get Minecraft on Chromebook
You can play Minecraft on Windows, Linux, macOS and even on mobile devices like Android or iOS. Unfortunately, no version of Minecraft has ever been created for the Chromebook. However, you can install Linux directly from the Chromebook settings page. Once you do you can install and play Minecraft on a Chromebook without difficulty.
To install Linux on your Chromebook, open Chromebook Settings and select Linux (Beta) from the left menu. Select to turn on the Linux pane.
The local storage on your Chromebook is used to set up Linux. To ensure that you have enough storage, you can use the Chromebook file manager.
On the pop-up Linux setup window, select Next to continue. Enter a username for your Linux session and select Install. Chromebook can take a while to download and set-up the virtual machine in which Linux is installed. When it's done the Linux terminal window will appear.
Visit the Minecraft download page and download the Debian/Ubuntu Minecraft.deb file to your Chromebook. Save the file to the Linux files folder in your Chromebook storage area.
Double-click the Minecraft.deb file and click the Install button to install Minecraft into the Linux virtual machine on your Chromebook.
Once the installation is finished, open the App Drawer and click on the Linux folder, and select Minecraft Launcher.
To install the most current Java Development Kit version, when you notice an error in the installation, open Terminal app from the drawer of apps.
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get upgrade
- sudo apat-get install default JDK
This will launch Minecraft on Chromebook. The login screen will open. Log in to your Minecraft account and start playing Minecraft! Once you have launched the game, the app will install the most recent version on your Linux container.
You can play the Demo without buying Minecraft. To enjoy the full version, you'll have to click the Buy now link and purchase Minecraft Java Edition.
How to Play Minecraft on Chromebook
If you follow the steps to install Minecraft, it will run flawlessly on your Chromebook. However, you may find the game to be a little slow or the mouse might not function as it should. There are several Chromebook settings that you can adjust to improve performance and reduce the possibility of encountering issues.
Allow Chrome Flags
Allow Chrome flags. These flags will improve your Minecraft playing experience. If you don't see any flags below, that means that the flag isn't accessible on your Chromebook. You don’t need to enable the flag.
You can enable all of the flags listed below by opening the Chrome browser and typing (or pasting!) the URL into the URL. Then, select Enabled from the dropdown menu.

Chromebook Optimize Minecraft Settings
To optimize Minecraft settings on Chromebook to optimize settings on your Chromebook, press Esc while you are playing and select Options from the menu. Select Video Settings. Adjust the settings below.
Graphics: Fast
Smooth Lighting: Off
Render Distance: 10 chunks
Max Framerate: 30 frames per second
Clouds: OFF
Particles are very small.

Install OptiFine for Minecraft
If you own a less expensive Chromecast device and you find that Minecraft remains a bit slow, even after updating the settings above, you can install OptiFine for Minecraft. Forums This app optimizes your framerate on lower-end Chromebooks. Download the latest version, place it in your Linux file folder, and then use the Terminal window to type.
java -jar OptiFine_1.14.4_HD_U_F5.jar
(Replace the file's name by the one you have downloaded. In our case above, our file name is OptiFine_1.14.4_HD_U_F5).
Select Install to install OptiFine to your Chromebook Linux installation.
This means that you can play Minecraft full-screen on a Chromebook and it will work well.
Minecraft for Chromebook
On the Minecraft sign-up page, you'll notice a message saying that Minecraft does not work on Chromebook. It's true, but when you follow the method above, you aren't playing Minecraft on your Chromebook. You're playing it inside a Linux virtual machine that is running on your Chromebook. The Minecraft servers are aware that you are playing Minecraft on the Linux computer.
This means that so long as you own one of the supported Chromebook devices, you can run Linux (Beta) and play Minecraft on your Chromebook without any problems whatsoever. If you don't have an approved device but would like to play Minecraft you might consider upgrading to one the best Chromebooks currently available.
