New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Bring Back Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard has come back after years of sporting a clean-shaven style. The iconic blue-shirted avatar of the game of crafting, Minecraft Steve's original avatar featured an unnatural brown goatee that many players mistakenly believed was smiling eyes - but it was removed to offer a more gender-neutral appearance for the sandbox game's default character.



In 2014, another default skin was released to Minecraft - Minecraft Alex. With a green top and a longer red hair tied into ponytails, Alex offers a slightly more feminine appearance than Steve's model. Microsoft studio head for Minecraft Helen Chiang said in an interview in 2018 that Microsoft wanted to use the Minecraft brand to break away from gender stereotypes through presenting Alex and Steve as having similar physical attributes and abilities.



With two options available, it was decided to bring back Steve’s famous goatee. A post on the Minecraft subreddit highlighted the new skins, which also improve the shading of Alex to give the second character model an authentic three-dimensional appearance. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with a lot of fans excited to see Steve's original beard back.



Many of the commenters have said that they're glad that Steve has returned to the look given in most official artwork - including the character's appearance in Nintendo brawler Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I can see why they decided to remove it," said the Reddit post with the highest number of votes. "But it was evidently an important element of Steve's style, which Mojang seems to be in agreement with." Wzjxzz We are glad to see it back after all these years."



Minecraft lead artist Jasper Boerstra took to Twitter to discuss the change, saying, "I'm happy you like the return of the beard!" Boerstra also notes that some classic bands and 'pillow shading' techniques are utilized in the new skins "to give a touch of the OG Jankiness," but asks players for their thoughts on whether this decision is an appropriate one or not. The skins also include classic choices, in case you prefer the more traditional looks.
