Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: 'It's all about my sanity'
Just after Microsoft announced it would buy Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn, (PS1.5bn), Markus Persson, the Swedish developer behind Markus Persson - also known as Notch posted his personal statement about the purchase. We've copied it as a whole below:
I'm leaving Mojang
I don't consider myself a game developer. I create games for amusement and because I love programming. But I don’t intend to make them huge hits. I also don’t want to make a difference in the world.
Minecraft was a huge success. People claim that it has changed their lives. I never intended for it to do that. It's a nice compliment, and it's fascinating to slowly be in the spotlight.
It was a long time ago that I decided to end Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to lead it, and I wanted to explore things that were completely new. Although I tried to make it bigger initially but was unsuccessful. However, since I chose to stick to small prototypes, interesting challenges, and I have enjoyed so much doing my work.
I wasn't entirely sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but because people told me that I was important for the culture, I decided to stay.
I was home with a cold a few weeks ago when the internet went wild with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. do with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this out of frustration.
Then I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and began to realize I didn't have the connection with my fans that I thought I did. I have become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol. I don’t want to be accountable for something I don’t understand. That I don’t want to do anything about. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive director. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who loves to share opinions on Twitter.
When this deal is completed I will quit Mojang and continue to work on Ludum Dares and small web-based experiments. If I make something that appears to gain popularity, I'll probably stop it right away.

In light of the fact that my public image already is a bit skewed, I don't expect to get away from negative feedback by doing this however, at least at this point I don't feel the need to read them.
I'm aware this goes against a lot of what I've spoken about in public. I don't have a solid answer to that. I'm also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of the struggle you felt. I'm not. I'm a person and I'm struggling with you.
You are my best friend. You are incredible. Thank you for making Minecraft what it is today. There are just too many of us and I am not responsible for something as massive as Minecraft. In one sense, it's a part belonging to Microsoft today. It's been part of your lives for a long time, and will continue to be yours.
It's not all about the money. It's about my mental health.
