Xbox, Sony Hackers Hit by Hack Attack

Hack attack on Sony and Xbox

20 January 2015

Hacking group Lizard Squad has been hit by a scandalous attack that exposed the entire database of those who registered to use Lizard Squad's services.

The group claimed to have knocked the Xbox and PlayStation gaming networks offline around Christmas.

Then, it set up an online platform that allowed anyone who paid for its software to flood other sites with data.

The attack that exposed the list of customers is only one of the many aimed at the group or its tools.

Brian Krebs, an investigative journalist, broke the story about the breach of the Lizard Stresser database. The Stresser let those who paid make use of it to overwhelm websites or take people offline by bombarding the websites they were visiting with data.

Mr. Krebs did not reveal who accessed the data but claimed he'd gotten an archive of the complete list of 14,241 individuals who signed up.

Anyone who visited the Stresser website was warned by text message in the login box. It advised them to change their password that they had created when they signed up.

In a blog post in a blog post, Mr Krebs said the Lizard Squad had not taken many steps to safeguard the login and contact details given by users.

"All registered usernames and passwords were stored in plain text," said Mr Krebs, adding that only a handful of the users who signed up had paid to use it.

Tech news site Ars Technica also obtained the database dump, which was posted on Mega file-sharing system. It revealed that the majority of those who used it were gamers trying to stop their opponents from playing a specific game. Minecraft servers were a favourite user of Stresser according to the report.

Ars Technica said the dump of the database could spell problems for anyone who had used it because the IP addresses of many of them were not properly obscured and could, with a bit of work, be recovered.

The petty theft of the database comes just after other computer experts took apart the tools that Lizard Squad has been using. One of the hackers revealed the source code of the program used to attack IRC chat network users.

Additionally, shortly after the Stresser website was launched computer science student Eric Zhang managed to enumerate the names of all people who had signed up with a simple script.

He said, "That took only 10 minutes."

He also said that he was not shocked that the entire database was stolen because he checked the site and noticed that access to the public server was accessible.

"If you look at the site , it's clearly managed by someone who doesn't have much formal experience in software engineering," he said.

"Most of what they are doing isn't really impressive," he said. "Anyone can do this. It's just a matter of time.

Mr. Krebs said Lizard Squad was being targeted by security personnel who were annoyed by their sudden notoriety.

He also said that there was a general feeling in the security sector that these guys are over their heads. If we don't find justice for a few teens from Western countries who are rubbing it in everyone's faces, that's an unsettling situation.

He said that the group survived because of the length of time it required for investigations to be conducted and members found. Recent arrests of Lizard Squad members seemed only to have scooped up some of its gangsters, but let a few core members remain in the open.
