'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

Just over an year after introducing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30th , 2021, to play the augmented reality game. It's not available for download from the app marketplaces and isn't accessible to download.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and all the changes to daily life that it's brought with it. "Minecraft Earth was designed around playing with no restrictions and in a collaborative manner which have become near impossible in the current climate," the studio said. Similar to Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had modified the game to make it more accessible to play at home. The changes weren't enough, however.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) 1 January 5, 2021. But there's some good news in today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang is rolling out one final update for Minecraft Earth, which it claims contains modifications "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth enjoyable as possible." Among other tweaks that are included, the update gets rid the use of real money transactions and significantly reduces the time it'll take for players to craft and create things in the game. The update also gives players a chance to see all the content that Mojang was working on before the announcement today. "We believe these changes will allow players to explore, create and build more while staying safe inside," the studio said.



Microsoft will erase player information on July 1 after June 30th has passed. If you've spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the life of the game, you'll be given an account token that allows you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your mobile device. This is a disappointing ending for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. The company had high hopes for the game when it first shown in action at WWDC 2019. Stockalicious The fact Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the pandemic, with all of Microsoft's resources available it's not a good indication of the future of consumer AR applications.
