Seizures in Children and Tonic Clonic Syndrome
Seizures in children are a frightening experience for everyone. Fortunately, most seizures can be controlled. Getting a clear diagnosis is important. It helps doctors to understand why the seizure is happening. A physical examination and a detailed medical history will help to determine what kind of seizure the child is having.
A seizure is a rapid, irregular jerking of one or more parts of the body. In general, a seizure lasts from five to 45 seconds. Some types of seizures can cause temporary loss of vision. Children may also be unable to speak or move properly. Medications are usually used to prevent and control these types of seizures. However, there are sometimes side effects to the medication.
There are two main types of seizures in children: absence and focal. An absence seizure is usually short, lasting only a few minutes. This type of seizure involves the child's torso and arms. The child's eyes may blink. These types of seizures are often called "petit mal" or very brief seizures.
Focal seizures are caused by head trauma, brain tumors, or infection. During a focal seizure, the child's muscles stiffen, and he or she becomes drowsy. Depending on the location of the abnormal electrical activity in the brain, these seizures may result in a loss of awareness or loss of ability to respond to commands.

Another type of seizure is the generalized tonic-clonic seizure. During a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, the child may bite the tongue or cheek. He or she may also fall from a standing position. When the seizure stops, the child regains consciousness.

Children with a seizure should be placed on their sides and taken to a hospital. Their lips will become bluish and they may be unable to respond appropriately to their parents' voice. Once in the hospital, they will receive intravenous medicine and will be monitored by a health care provider.
