Why Silicon Valley is betting on making this dystopian sci-fi idea a reality



It's the latest example of Fortnite bringing experiences that go beyond regular gaming, as it attempts to position itself as a metaverse rather than just a video game. Last year, it hosted music performances from artists such as Marshmello and Travis Scott, as well as three films by director Christopher Nolan.



The metaverse was originally conceived as a setting for dystopian science fiction novels, where virtual universes provide an escape from crumbling societies. However, the tech industry has painted a far rosier image of the concept in recent months. The idea is to create a space similar to the internet, but one that users (via avatars created by digital technology) can walk around inside of and communicate with one another in real-time.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was extremely proud to announce Fortnite as a metaverse and as an "social event" when he was a witness in the high-profile lawsuit against Apple he filed earlier this year. The lawsuit was brought against Apple over the commissions that the iPhone maker takes from app developers. Sweeney's arguments were meant to back up Epic's claim that Fortnite is more than a game. It also shattered Apple's claim that Fortnite is not a monopoly, as Fortnite players can play the game on other devices than iPhones or iPads.



Epic however, in the opposite attempted to present itself as one the millions of apps in Apple's App store that are subject to strict restrictions and commissions for in-app purchases. (A decision in the case is still waiting to be decided.)



Fortnite isn’t the only game that heavily depends on the concept of metaverse.



One of the more notable examples is Roblox that has games within games that are created by users. It has also branched out into concerts and TV shows in recent months. Dhakacourier Minecraft, owned by Microsoft (MSFT) has also worked on expanding its own metaverse, with the company Reporters Without Borders recently creating an online library within the game , which includes articles that have been banned all over the world.

Big Tech is also increasingly embracing the metaverse, with the word being mentioned nearly twice on Facebook's most recent earnings call. As it tries to expand beyond two-dimensional video calls the social media giant has been using virtual reality features and services for a long time.



A full-fledged metaverse is still likely years away for several reasons however, the gaming industry is currently the main force behind the revolution.
