Students Encouraged to Dream at Young Leaders Day

Experience a 3-D life. That's the challenge inspirational New Zealand leaders put to the crowd of more than 2,000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools at the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) which was held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier today.

Students had the opportunity to hear from Laura Langman, a Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player, and Cam Calkoen, an athlete and founder of the Carabiner Mentoring Programme, as and Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive at The Mind Lab Frances Valintine and Charlie Laumatia, presenter of Attitude Programmes for Schools.

NYLD events push students to live a 3D lifestyle by imagining, daring and developing their leadership potential.

"Just as a 3D movie that explodes off the screen and explodes onto the screen, the experience of a 3D life is superior to a boring flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale declares.

"Imagine what your life might look like. Follow that dream. Do the courageous things that make life an adventure. Your strengths are your greatest assets. There is so much more to you than you think. Students were taught that determination, vision, and guts are the key to a successful life.

Frances Valintine was a driving factor behind Media Design School. She founded The Mind Lab in Newmarket in 2013, a facility that offers robotics, electronics programming, filmmaking, and science technology to children aged 4-15 years old.

Frances challenged the leaders of tomorrow to prepare for a changing future.

"To prepare for the future, you must to be open in your thinking to be curious. It will be your biggest strength, not technology, not the way you play Minecraft, but curiosity and discovery," Frances said, as the students took notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up every morning and think about ways that I can make things better.

The day was both inspiring and entertaining. A performance by The Laughing Samoans, interactive games and 3D video clips were the highlights of the day.

Since 2001, more than 90,000 New Zealand students have attended the National Young Leaders Day. The events are held every year in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North, Rotorua. Christchurch and Dunedin.
