In the story Squeaky is confident with her ability to run track. She believes she is one of the fastest runners that no one can beat. She didn't consider that there was anyone that she couldn't beat. She especially knew she would beat Gretchen. During the race Squeaky notices Raymond, her older brother who people assume is her younger brother because she's always sticking up for him since he has a disability, running along side her. This gave her the sudden realization that he could possibly be a runner just like her with some training, from her of course. It also made her realize that winning isn't everything, she should let someone else win for a change, such as Gretchen or even Raymond. I'm sure she has many trophies and Gretchen has very few if any. At the very end Gretchen and Squeaky exchange smiles showing a sign of respect or admiration. This shows Squeaky is a dynamic character.
