Recently, we've received feedback from our community members seeking clarification and clarity regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.
We are updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more detailed information on the latest technologies. However, we want to share our opinion that NFT integrations into Minecraft are not something we would recommend or allow. Let's have a closer look!
WHAT IS AN NFT?
An NFT is an exclusive, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain and typically purchased with cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any digital asset like an MPEG or GIF. However digital art, such as JPEGs is the most popular usage case for this token. The purchase of an NFT provides the token that states the ownership of the original digital file. However, as with any digital file, that file can be moved, copied, or even deleted. NFTs and blockchain have also been associated with speculation, where prices are driven up rapidly and, as we've observed, they can fall quickly.
What are the implications for me?
We strongly suggest to go through the following guidelines if you are a participant or creator involved in the trading buying or selling of NFTs that utilize Minecraft (like skins and worlds). If you don't, these changes will not be a problem for you.
OUR POLICY ON MINECRAFT NFTS
In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we define how a server's owner can charge for access, and how everyone should be able to access the same functionality. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. NFTs may, however, create exclusion models and scarcity that are not in accordance with our guidelines and the purpose and spirit of Minecraft.
To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated inside our client and server applications. Neither can Minecraft game-specific content, such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods be incorporated by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. The reasons for this are as follows.
NFT implementations have been announced by various companies that can be connected to Minecraft world files and skin pack. NFTs and blockchains can be used in conjunction with Minecraft to create Minecraft collectible NFTs. This lets players earn NFTs by performing activities on a server or earning Minecraft NFT rewards.
Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies results in digital ownership that is built on scarcity or exclusion. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creativity, inclusion as well as playing together and sharing our resources. NFTs are not inclusive of our community and create a scenario of the haves and have-nots. NFTs encourage speculation and profiteering, which we believe is not compatible with long-term joy and success for our players.
We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being secure and could cost the customers who buy them. minecraft Third-party NFT implementations may also depend on blockchain technology. They could require an asset manager who can disappear without notice. NFTs have been sold at inflated or artificially high prices in certain instances. We are aware that the creation process within our game is intrinsically valuable and we aim to provide a marketplace in which those values can be acknowledged.
In order to ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and enjoyable experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications. Nor can they be utilized to create NFTs for any game-related content, such as skins, worlds and other items, or any other mods. We will also be monitoring how blockchain technology evolves over time to make sure that the above principles are not breached, and to determine if it will offer more secure experiences or other useful, inclusive applications in gaming. We are not planning to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft at this time.
We will be giving you more information soon. In the meantime, if you're interested in reading up on our guidelines, you can find them here. Stay tuned!
