Effective methods for self-studying Japanese
New Japanese learners may ask themselves: is it possible to learn Japanese by myself?, but you're not alone. The idea that anyone can learn one of the hardest languages in the world without any teachers was insane to me.

After completing college, I decided to challenge myself with a tough goal, and I ended up reaching it in some way. My first attempt at the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2 took me a year to pass, but it wasn't quite as big an achievement as I thought it would be. Later, I'll tell you more about that, but first let me share how I learned Japanese and passed the JLPT N2 with a score of 97/180 (90 is the passing score).

I think learning 2000 Kanji characters is the harder part, not remembering the hiragana and katakana charts. Due to headaches, I decided to skip learning the Kanji for a while in the first month of my journal. zing wondered why Japanese people don't exclusively use hiragana in their writing system, as Koreans do. Everyone would be much happier if we did that. It took me a little while to realize how much I loved the Kanji.

The famous book Remembering the Kanji by Heisig may be familiar to you. A must-have book for all Japanese learners who want to save time and effort when learning Kanji. By creating a story or image for every Kanji, you will not forget them. Even though there is no guarantee that this book will work for everyone or that you will become an expert at learning Chinese characters after reading it, it certainly is the most effective of the hundreds of books available.

There are some downsides to this book, including that you cannot get the on and kun reading for the characters. Since we can learn each character somewhere else, I believe that the author is trying to teach us the best way to remember them. Google the on and kun readings of each character if you're a serious learner.

Practice writing sentences and short essays to learn how to write Kanji. You will finally remember the word if you use it repeatedly in different sentences. Also, ask someone to correct your grammar mistakes for you by typing them into your computer.

There are thousands of audio, video, and pdf lessons available. There will probably be no other site with as many Japanese lessons as this one. Their lessons can be divided into four main categories: Absolute beginner, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Seasons within each category contain 20+ lessons each. Learn online or offline by downloading the pdf and mp3 files.
