Underwater cities in the real world were the mainstay of popular science fiction. They were featured in a variety of books, movies and TV shows in the 1960s and 1970s. Today the focus is on space stations.
Humankind has never built an entire underwater city. BEAGO Or did they? But, we have built a few small habitats below the waterline - areas where humans can live and work as well as rest.
The most well-known is likely SEALAB. It was constructed by the US Navy to advance deep diving research and rescue. There were several versions built in the 1960s. One of the most memorable was a phone call made by divers and President Lyndon B Johnson. The diver was speaking in a helium-rich environment which made his voice sound distorted. The call had to be canceled.
Today, a few underwater labs remain. MarineLab located in Florida is the longest-running. It has been continuously in operation since 1984. It is used for training and scientific research. It is located next to Jules' Undersea Lodge, which has been converted into a luxury hotel that has a large movie selection and even the possibility to get pizza delivered by divers. The hotel has hosted 10,000 overnight guests in its 30 years of operation.
