Minecraft 1.18 Release Date: What's Coming with Caves And Cliffs Part 2?

What's new in Minecraft 1.18 and when will it release? Together, 1.17 and 1.18 make the massive Caves and Cliffs update which will forever change the worlds of Minecraft with a huge number of new blocks, amazing new resources, and stupendous world generation changes - all of which we'll go over in the following article.

Here's what to expect with Caves and Cliffs Part 2 as well as the latest news regarding the Minecraft 1.18 release date.

Minecraft 1.18 will be released on November 30th for both Java and Bedrock editions as announced on Minecraft.net. This release will form part 2 of the Caves and Cliffs update, that was originally planned to be released in a single installment together with 1.17. Mojang decided to break Caves and Cliffs into two major updates in order to give them to spend more time working on the huge changes these releases will bring Minecraft.

And I mean massive. Caves and Cliffs part 1 introduced more than 90 new block types new creatures, such as Glow Squid, Goats, and Axolotls; and new tools such as Lightning Rods and Spyglasses. Caves and Cliffs part 2 will fundamentally alter the nature of terrain in Minecraft and increase the depths of levels of the world with all sorts of new resources and bizarre items. Let's take an overview of the Minecraft 1.18 update features.

Terrain changes: exploring below Y=0

In Minecraft 1.18 the world generation feature is being redesigned and for the first time, you'll be able dig below Y-Level 0.

The new depth is -64. below Y=0, you'll be in the known as the "Deepslate layer", where stone-type blocks transform into deepslate blocks. This is also true for ore veins: you'll find copper, gold, iron, redstone, and the like in deepslate veins when you're below the Y=0.

You'll find all sorts of intriguing cave structures in 1.18 thanks to the new underground terrain generation changes. The Caves and Cliffs changes were to include the all-new Deep Dark biome, but this biome, as well as its perilous denizen, the Warden was delayed due to Minecraft 1.19: The Wild Update.

The changes in terrain also mean that you'll have to search elsewhere for Diamonds. Find out more about this with our guide on how to find Diamonds in Minecraft.

The towering mountains

Minecraft 1.18 is currently being revamped. The mountains are now created in a different manner. Instead of having just one or two "extreme hills", or "mountain" biomes There are five new sub-biomes which make up the different layers in each mountain.

Mountain Meadow (Y=100-140),: home to flowers and sweet berry bushes and Mountain Grove (Y=110–140),: snowy, home for rabbits and Polar bears. - Snowy Slopes (Y=140-170): snowy and icy, home to goats. - Lofty Peaks (Y=170+) are mountains of snow, stones, and ice. - Snow Capped Peaks: Similar to Lofty Peaks but cold enough to make Packed Ice.

If you're paying attention to those Y-Levels you'll see that 1.18 is increasing the maximum heights of mountains. They were capped at 140 Y, but can now be Y=255. This is a great option for castles and towers at the top of mountains.

However there is a chance that not all mountains will be as tall as this. Only the tallest mountains will have the new Lofty Peaks or Snow Capped Peaks biomes. These new terrain changes will bring a new zeal of exploration and discovery to any 1.18 Minecraft world. You can be sure that I will be hard at work updating our list of the top Minecraft seeds when part 2 of Caves and Cliffs is available!

Biomes of Dripstone Cave and Lush Cave

Dive back to the ground again Caves and Cliffs part 2 is bringing two more cave types that include the Lush Cave and the Dripstone Cave.

Lush Caves are cool caves that are full of vines and moss. It sounds like Lush Caves will make great environments for some parkour. I'm excited to see how these gorgeous caves look like when you use the top Minecraft shader packs.

Dripstone Caves are home to the Dripstone blocks. These new blocks naturally develop from the process of dripping to make organic-looking stalagmites and stalactites. Apart from this amazing terrain feature, Dripstone Caves are functionally similar to other caves but will be highly sought after just for the dripstone.

What about the other features promised in Caves and Cliffs Part 2?

Several notable additions that were planned to be released with Minecraft 1.18 have since been delayed and will be available in Minecraft 1.19 which is expected to drop sometime in 2022. These delays include the new Deep Dark biome, Sculk Blocks and the Warden.

It's been confirmed at least three of those delayed features (namely Bundles and Archaeology) won't be included with the Wild Update. However, the Minecraft team is trying to assure us that none of these features are being canceled. Still, it's sad news for those who have been the most enthusiastic about these changes however, at least we'll soon get to experience the massive new terrain changes that Minecraft 1.18 will bring.

This concludes the overview of Minecraft's 1.18 update. Until then, the best way to alter the look of your world and bring that excitement back into the game is to install one of the best Minecraft texture packs. If you're looking to have something completely different from your typical singleplayer experience Why not take a look at one of the many great Minecraft servers available right now?
