Children to Design new National Park In Minecraft

Children to design a new national park in Minecraft

Students in Adelaide, Australia, have been asked to create the national park in Minecraft that could later be constructed in the real world.

Students aged between nine and twelve were asked to create their own designs in the 3D world.

These results could be used to enhance existing national parks in Adelaide.

The government has allocated $10.4m Australian dollars (PS5.4m) for the redesigns.

It was eager to find a new method to involve young people in its activities.

"This competition is part a community engagement project asking everyone of all ages to suggest facilities that will encourage them to spend more time in national park," reads the Natural Resources, Adelaide website that announced the prize.

"The State government has allotted $10.4m for parks projects. This means that some of the ideas that your class comes up with might end up being used."

It was added that the sole rule is that any design has to be possible to be realized in the real world.

"The parks features should complement the natural environment by taking into consideration the creatures and plants that live there."

It suggested that ideas could include trails for bushwalking, mountain cycling or horse riding, barbecue and picnic areas or something completely different."

Redesigning the slums

There is a growing trend create more adventurous Minecraft designs.

The Danish government has mapped the entire country in the game as part of an educational project.

Mojang the creators and developers of Minecraft collaborated with the UN in 2012 to help the design of cities in developing countries.

They designed public spaces and shared them with community groups. Participants could then redesign the spaces.

The project has led to new ideas for green space in Kiberia the biggest slum in Nairobi and the tool was also utilized to design a new waterfront in Les Cayes, Haiti's third largest city.

The Adelaide competition ends on June 12th and the winner will be announced a month later.

The winners will receive a government-funded trip in the Belair National Park.
