Farnoush Farsiar: Why are there so few women in finance?
Women are breaking through the barriers and reaching amazing success in a range of fields. However, the sad reality is but women make up a small percentage of financial professionals. This may not change anytime soon, however.

Deloitte insights estimates that 31% of financial sector employees will be women in 2030. This raises the question "Why do women have a hard time working in the finance industry?" There are numerous theories about the reasons for this but we were looking for an opinion from someone who has been in the field for a long time. Farnoush Farnoush was interviewed by us. She is an experienced financial professional who is a passionate advocate for women empowerment.

How Many Women are there in Finance?

In the U.S., 57% are women, but they have only 24% of financial jobs. The figure is projected to rise to 28% within the next ten to 20 years, up from 24% at present.

The lack of diversity isn't only a problem for women. Farnoush Farsiar has stated that diversity is a problem for economic growth. Farsiar noted that diverse leadership teams are more effective than those that have fewer perspectives. "So it's not just crucial for females to be included in these positions; it's also critical for the nation in general."

There are many theories on why women in the finance sector aren't represented. One theory is that the financial sector is too male-dominated and competitive to permit women to enter the field. Another theory is that their parents and peers discourage women from pursuing financial careers.

Farsiar believes that the root problem lies in the way women are socialized young. "Women at a young stage are taught that they should be risk takers but caregivers. "We're taught not to make chances, but instead to be safe. This doesn't work for an enviable career in the financial.

Women are taught not just to care for others, but also to please people. Farsiar states that women are indoctrinated as polite and to minimize conflict. But in finance it is essential to communicate your ideas. You need to be able to advocate for your ideas.

The lack of women in finance is particularly apparent at the top levels of the industry. According to a 2016-2017 survey conducted by Pew Women hold just 10% of the top executive posts. They also hold only 11.5% of seats on the boards of financial firms.

This inequality has a direct impact on women working as financial professionals. This is due to the fact that women are less likely to get promoted than male counterparts and are also more likely to leave the field.

The good news is that women are slowly, but surely becoming more senior. Farnoush Farsiar believes the reason for this rise is because of the #womenshould movement that has raised awareness of the problem of diversity. Farsiar claimed that she was "convinced" that the #MeToo Movement was a major influence. Women are beginning to assert their rights and demand change.

There are barriers to women pursuing finance.
There are many obstacles that women face in order to be successful in financial services. A lack of role models is just one of these biggest obstacles. Women in finance are often the only female within their field, which can be isolating.

Farsiar said that being the sole woman in a room can be extremely stressful. "You feel that you have to be perfect every time, and you cannot be a fool."

Farsiar admits "there is some truth to this." "I've witnessed it myself. Men will make promotions for men, even when they're more competent.

This mindset of the old boys can result in sexual harassment and discrimination. Female finance professionals are often confronted with ostracizing remarks and unwelcome advances from male colleagues.

Farnoush Farsiar declares "It's certainly an issue." "Women in Finance are usually treated like objects. It's hard to advance when you're treated in this manner."

Last but not least, there is the issue of flexible working arrangement. Females are more likely than males to be entrusted with family responsibilities, such as taking care of children or elderly parents. Flexible working schedules are required to ensure that they can manage work and family.

"Finance is a highly-risky business. It is difficult to handle your obligations while working in finance. Women often are being forced to choose between family and work.

These obstacles make getting high-level post in the financial service industry very difficult for females. There are however a few initiatives that can help change this.

Farsiar believes the Women in Finance Charter "is an amazing leap forward." It encourages financial firms as well as other companies to tackle gender diversity.

Women are now able to take on the top positions in organizations such as We-Fi and Women in Finance Charter. This is good news for both women and the financial sector.
