Main Purpose -
The purpose of the Missouri Compromise was to settle tensions between anti- and pro-slavery states. At the time, there were an equal amount of free and slavery states. Missouri was petitioning for statehood as a slave state, which would have upset that balance.
What -
The Missouri Compromise was an effort by Congress to reduce tension in the sectional and political rivalries caused by the request of Missouri, in late 1819, for admission as a state in which slavery would be permitted. At the time, the United States contained twenty-two states, evenly divided between slave and free.
When -
The Missouri Compromise was passed on March 3rd, 1820. The Missouri Compromise was repealed in May 30th, 1854.
How did it happen? On March 3, 1820, Congress passed a bill granting Missouri statehood as a slave state under the condition that slavery was to be forever prohibited in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase north of the 36th parallel, which runs approximately along the southern border of Missouri.
