Tout d'abord, le syndrome de cotard à été découvert par Jules Cotard, un psychiatre français, le 28 juin 1880.Ce médecin à découvert sur un de ses patients plusieurs nouveaux symptômes qu'il ne connaissait pas avant.Le sujet croyait qu'il ne possédait plus d'organes et souffrait d'une certaine forme d'hypochondrie.(il s'agit d'un syndrome caractérisé par la peur et l'anxiété excessive).

Ensuite,Selon plusieurs spécialistes, cette maladie mentale peut survenir soudainement chez un patient,mais la plupart des victimes sont atteints d'une dépression clinique ou d'une maladie neurologique comme la schyzophrénie.
