Türk milletibağımsızlığını ilan etmesi için bir marşa ihtiyaç duymuştur. Bir kurul toplanmış ve adayların şiirleri oylanmıştır. Kimsenin şiiri yurdumuz için ideal olmamıştır. O zamanlar iyi bir besteci olan Mehmet Akif ERSOY'a haber yollanmıştır. Bunun sonunda büyük bir miktar para ödülü olduğu için Mehmet Akif bu teklife sıcak bakmamıştır. O kadar koca yüreklidir ki vatan sevgisini para için kullanmak istememiştir. Israr edilince ödülü almam , bağışlarım öyle katılırım demiştir. Yarışmaya katıldığında 10 kıta ve 41 dizeden oluşan İSTİKLAL MARŞIMIZI yazmıştır.Okurken duygulandığımız bu Marş jüriler tarafından seçilmiş , beğenilmiş ve 1921 yılında kabul görmüştür. İstiklal Marşımızın tüm dizeleri 4 ancak 41 olması için son dizesi 5 satırdan oluşmuştur. Bunun nedeni gene vatanseverlikle ilgilidir. Nedeni çeşit çeşittir. Arş kuralları gereği bu şekilde olmuştur. Ayrıca 5 bağımsızlığı temsil eder ve bayrağımızın kurtuluşumuzun yüceliği için son satırlara eklenmiştir.En önemli nedeni ise KURTULUŞ SAVAŞI'NIN 41 AY sürmesidir. Bunu esas alarak yazılmıştır.41.satırda zaferimizin ilanı verilmiştir. Mehmet Akif kazandığı parayı kendisinin bir mont alacak parası olmadığı halde başka muhtaçlara dağıtmıştır. Biz de bu koca yürekli vatanseveri tekrardan saygı ile anıyoruz. Ata'mızın bıraktığı bu ülkeye Allah tekrardan marş yazdırmasın inşallah!
