Dalam Aikido, ken atau jo digunakan hanya untuk membentuk semangat dari suatu gerakan, teknik yang sempurna, dan harmonisasi. Bila seorang Aikidoka memegang ken, jo, atau senjata lain, itu tidak berarti ia boleh menggunakannya untuk melukai atau membunuh seseorang. Seorang Aikidoka harus tetap dapat melakukan taijutsu sehingga lawannya tidak terluka.
