Passage 1
Birgit wrapped her scarf tightly around her and set off for school on her skis. Having grown up in Denmark, she was used to the cold, but today the air was icy and bitter. Suddenly, up ahead, she saw her friend Anders on his skis. He had come face-to-face with a troll!
Oh, no, she thought, if I help Anders, I will be late to school again! Maybe I should just go through the woods. Her friend needed her, though, so she thought up a plan.
“This troll is blocking my path,” Anders said when Birgit reached him.
“It is a cold day,” the troll growled, “and I want the boy’s warm winter coat.”
Birgit thought a moment. “How about this? I will give you my colorful, handmade scarf to keep you warm. The other trolls will be so jealous.”
The troll broke into an ugly, toothy smile and nodded. Birgit unwrapped her scarf and handed it to him.
“Thank you!” Anders said as he and Birgit continued on to school.
Passage 2
Math had always come easy for Trinh. Even difficult problems seemed simple. Now, English was another matter. She had been in the United States for a year now, but it was still hard for her. She wished it were as easy for her as Vietnamese.
Trinh and her brother Hoa sat at the dining table doing their homework. Her mother brought them a plate of deep-fried corn to share.
“Trinh,” the mother said, “why don’t you help your brother with his math? You are so good at it, and he is struggling.”
“But Ma,” Trinh answered, “it is getting late, and I still have my English homework to do! Besides, there is a TV show I want to watch.”
“Young lady, your brother is more important than a TV show. He needs your help,” the mother said firmly.
Trinh sighed. “Okay,” she said.
Hoa smiled gratefully as his sister showed him how to work the problems. When they were finished, the mother said. “Thank you for doing that. Now, let me see if I can help you with English!”
