Attis sendiri memutilasi dirinya dikarenakan kecemburuan Zeus yang mendengar bahwa Attis menyebarkan ajarannya sendiri hingga ke Lydia atau dikenal juga sebagai Persia lama. Mendengar hal tersebut Zeus mengirim babi hutan untuk menyerang Lydia, hal ini yang mendorong Attis mengorbankan dirinya demi keselamatan rakyat-rakyat di sana.
Ada yang berpendapat, bahwa kisah Attis ini paralel dengan kisah Jesus.
