-scientist make discoveries not only in labs
-events and people in discoveries can be weird
-3 parts to cell theory:
a) all organisms are composed of one or more cells
b) the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms
c) all cells come from pre-existing cells
-Microscopic organism: and organism that cannot be seen with the naked eye
-Early 1600's: Zacharias Jansen made the first compound microscope and telescope
-Became popular item among scientists
-Anton Van Leeuwenhoek: Heard about microscopes and built his own (looked like tiny paddle size of sunglass lens)
-Looked at everything: found bacteria on dental scrapings
-Wrote down discoveries, but referred to bacteria as animalcules
-Sent letters to Robert Hooke (scientist friend)
-Robert Hooke: LOVED science; learned a little of every type
-Coined the term "Cell"
-Looked at piece of cork under microscope: found little chambers inside that looked like Cells-what monks slept in inside monasteries
-Not many scientists agreed with him; feuded with Sr Isaac Newton
a) Read book recently published by Newton on moving due to gravity: Hooke claimed Newton stole his ideas
-No one knows what Hooke truly looks like, due to a "misplacement" of his portrait-never found
-Two German scientists discovered something important
a) Mat Thias Schleiden-Botanist who studied plants under a microscope. Discovered that all plants he looked at were made of cells.
b) Theodore Schwann-Studied slides of Animal cells under microscope. Got a nerve cell named after him and invented rebreathers for firefighters. Came to conclusion that all animals are made up of cells.
-Sent letters to other scientists about his discoveries and Schleiden answered. They worked together on the beginning of the Cell Theory.
-Schleiden swore that cells came from free cell formation/spontaneously crystalized: Schwann said cells came from preexisting cells
-Rudolf Virchow: stepped in with research to prove Schwann correct
a) The research was stolen from Robert Remack: feuded with Virchow
