Drama Prep for Performance
For my practical drama examination, I have decided to do design on the short play ‘Fairytale Heart’. Fairytale Heart is a timeless drama piece, created by Philip Ridley. The play is about two young adolescents, and how they must face up to the fact that their single parents are finding new love, and how they must each deal with their own problems and emotions.

When I started off my research, I looked through a copy of the script and took down a list of words, quotations and key moments that stuck out to me, which would later be used for ideas and inspiration for potential design concepts that I could look into and use. After taking down a good amount of notes from the script, I went through, contemplating on the different paths of design each one could take, though after taking time to consider the different choices, and trying a few out, (Such as ‘From dust to dust’ In which I made the point of pointing out how the community centre was now abandoned and was slowly going back to what the land once was, as nature reclaimed it, and over took the building), I went with the design concept of ‘Melting emotions.’
With a design concept in mind, I next went on to look at the social and historical context of my play, to get a better picture of where it was all set and why the characters acted the way they did. (Add more here.)
Design concept created, and thorough research done on the background within the play, I then started to look at how artists (Such as: ) created different types of melting effects, and started to create sketches on different ways I could show my design concept on the props within the play. Once this was done I looked through my sketches and weighed my options on what prop would be best to show of my concept, and after a few more sketches were done, I decided to pick the prop of the Ghetto Blaster.
Now having a chosen prop and concept design, I started to look through my material options. I looked at paper craft like Origami, and other creative outlets like clay, but decided on a simplistic and detailed method of cardboard, hot glue and paint. From here, I started to create my prop, after sourcing my materials.
