RANGE: The 6-mile-wide vertical strip of land contained between range lines, numbered consecutively from both east and west of the principal meridian
Base Lines are latitude lines
Correction Lines every 24 miles north and south of BL
Township lines every 6 miles north and south of CL
TOWNSHIP/TIER: The 6-mile-wide horizontal strip of land contained between townships lines, numbered consecutively from "1" both north and south of the base line.
The 24-by-24-mile square created by the intersection of guide meridians and base lines is called a check.
TOWNSHIP also refers to the square of land formed by the intersection of two range lines and two township lines - 6 miles on each side, 36 square miles. A township has 36 sections, and each section is one square mile. Sections within the township are numbered consecutively from 1 to 36. Section 1 is located in the northeast corner of the township. Sections are then numbered on a horizontal row, moving east to west, west to east and east to west with six sections on each row.
A section is first divided into quadrants. Those quadrants may then be divided into additional quadrants, and so on. In order to calculate the number of acres in a parcel of land, you may either divide 640 by the denominator of each fraction or multiply the denominators of each fraction together and then divide 640 by the product. The term "and" in a legal description requires that you calculate acreage for each side of the equation separately and then add the totals together.
You can calculate acreage by measuring a plot of land's length and width, multiplying those two figures together to find square footage, then dividing that number by 43,560.
There are 43,560 square feet in 1 acre. A square-shaped acre measures 208.71 by 208.71 feet, a standard 40-acre parcel of land is 1320 feet by 1320 feet, and 1 square mile is 640 acres.
The lot-and-block method is used for platted subdivisions that have been divided into blocks and lots. A plat map is an engineer's plan for development that includes lot divisions, street locations, the dimensions of the lot, street or improvements and monuments used for survey data. Plat maps are recorded in the courthouse of the county in which the land is situated, under the name of the subdivision and the book and page number.
Assessor's parcel numbers are assigned to every parcel of land within a county in Florida to aid in the assessment of property for tax collection. APNs are listed in a county's assessment roll, which also shows the owner's name and address of record, and the assessed value of the land and structures. A bench mark is a marker attached to a durable object that is used to measure elevation above a parcel of land. Elevation is measured from a datum.VC
