Cyberbullying causes long-lasting harm to victims. Boston Children’s hospital research concludes although the bullying time is short in span the harmful effects can be permanent. Cyberbullying develops in developing a low self-esteem. It affects kids’ academics adversely. Kids can skip school to avoid bullying and to develop addictions. Cyberbullying can have lasting health issues such as increased anxiety, panic disorder, and depression. In some worst case scenarios, they end their life by committing suicide.

It is very important that we stand united and make a concerted effort to educate kids, teachers, and parents to eradicate cyber bullying. The most effective way is to stand up to bully and confront it as soon as it occurs. Resilience, empathy, communication, conflict resolution and reporting are the five key ways we can tackle cyber bullying. We can get ourselves more informed and trained. “Cyberbullying: Our Children Our Problem” is an online training program developed by National white collar crime center in partnership with safe surfing foundation. It is available at NW3C.org/cyberbullying. The new enhancements in software programs that detect threatening content and automatically remove helps to reduce cyberbullying incidences. But the most effective way is to let kids know that they have their friends, parents and teachers support when needed. Thank you for listening.
