Assessments in a variety of subjects are often required for entry to college and university. Assessments ensure that you begin at the right level of coursework, especially in English and math. We don't want you taking courses that are too easy, but neither do we want you in courses that are too difficult.
Assessments in English, ESL, and math are required as part of the registration process at all community colleges. These courses are foundational to any college program, whether you are required to take them or not. The skills you acquire in these courses will make you a better student in the rest of your courses and more successful overall.
Most of the Cypress College programs require English and math coursework, and transferring will definitely require English and math. We recommend you begin taking these courses as early as possible.
Placement in English, ESL, and math is usually done by taking assessments here at Cypress College. Assessments taken at other colleges in just English and math may be used for placement, but transcripts from other colleges will also be required.
Assessments from other colleges for ESL are not accepted, as considerable variation occurs in ESL course offerings among colleges.
