- 2nd millenia BC = first inhabitants, Asian side of city
- Megara King Byzas took colonists to establish Byzantium, a colony
- Byzas chose the land around Bosphorus after consulting oracle of Delphi
- 6th century BC = Persians ruled it
- 4th century BC = Alexander the Great took over
- Peaceful period... until 2nd century BC
- 193 AD = Roman emperor Septimus Severus conquered city and stayed until CTG
- 4th century AD = Constantine the Great (emperor) made Byzantium capital of Roman Empire, (GAVE NAME! CONSTANTINOPLE)
- Eastern Roman Empire was called Byzantine Empire after 5th century BC
- In 532 Justinian I destroyed the city w/ riots
- 7th + 8th centuries AD = Besieged by Arabs
- 9th + 10th centuries AD= Besieged by Barbarians
- 1204-1261 AD = ruled by Fourth Crusade, destroyed and sacked all wealth
- Did not regain former richness nor strength after
- 1453 AD = Ottoman Turks conquered it (GAVE NAME! ISLAMBOL) (Lead by Sultan Mehmet II)
- 15th - 16th centuries AD = Sultans built many mosques and public buildings, population 500,000
- WWI = End of Ottoman Rule, Occupied by Allied troops
- Struggle led by Ataturk against occupying forces
- 1923 AD = Republic of Turkey born, capital moved to Ankara
- Istanbul thrives - popl. 13 million
