Another thing that we had to get over was the fact that the nonviolent resister does not seek to humiliate or defeat the opponent but to win his friendship and understanding. This was always a cry that we had to set before people that our aim is not to defeat the white community, not to humiliate the white community, but to win the friendship of all of the persons who had perpetrated this system in the past. The end of violence or the aftermath of violence is bitterness. The aftermath of nonviolence is reconciliation and the creation of a beloved community
Then we had to make it clear also that the nonviolent resister seeks to attack the evil system rather than individuals who happen to be caught up in the system. And this is why I say from time to time that the struggle in the South is not so much the tension between white people and Negro people. The struggle is rather between justice and injustice, between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. And if there is a victory it will not be a victory merely for fifty thousand Negroes. But it will be a victory for justice, a victory for good will, a victory for democracy.
The attitude that the only way to ultimately change humanity and make for the society that we all long for is to keep love at the center of our lives.

The question tonight, as I understand it, is "The Negro Revolt, and Where Do We Go From Here?" or “What Next?" In my little humble way of understanding it, it points toward either the ballot or the bullet.
We're all in the same boat and we all are going to catch the same hell from the same man. He just happens to be a white man. All of us have suffered here, in this country ….at the hands of the white man.
It doesn't mean that we're anti-white, but it does mean we're anti-exploitation, we're anti-degradation, we’re anti-oppression. And if the white man doesn't want us to be anti-him, let him stop oppressing and exploiting and degrading us.
If we don't do something real soon . . . we're going to be forced either to use the ballot or the bullet. It's one or the other in 1964. It isn't that time is running out -- time has run out!
And now you're facing a situation where the young Negro's coming up. They don't want to hear that "turn the-other-cheek" stuff, no. . . It'll be Molotov cocktails this month, hand grenades next month, and something else next month. It'll be ballots, or it'll be bullets. It'll be liberty, or it will be death.
The only difference about this kind of death -- it'll be reciprocal. "It takes two to tango; when I go, you go."
Don't wait until election time. If he (the white man) waits too long, brothers and sisters, he will be responsible for letting a condition develop in this country which will create a climate that will bring seeds up out of the ground with vegetation on the end of them looking like something these people never dreamed of. In 1964, it's the ballot or the bullet.
Thank you.
