“Dan (ingatlah) ketika Kami berfirman kepada para Malaikat: “Sujudlah” kamu kepada Adam,” maka sujudlah mereka kecuali Iblis; ia enggan dan takabur dan adalah ia termasuk golongan orang-orang yang kafir.”
Maksudnya begini:
(Dan) ingatlah! (Ketika Kami berfirman kepada para Malaikat, "Sujudlah kalian kepada Adam!") Maksudnya sujud sebagai penghormatan dengan cara membungkukkan badan, (maka mereka pun sujud, kecuali Iblis) yakni nenek moyang bangsa Jin yang ada di antara para malaikat, (ia enggan) tak hendak sujud (dan menyombongkan diri) dengan mengatakan bahwa ia lebih mulia daripada Adam (dan Iblis termasuk golongan yang kafir) dalam ilmu Allah Taala.
Dalam kepercayaan saya mengetahui jika Iblis (berasal dari bahasa Arab “Abasa” yang memiliki arti sebagai “Pembangkang”) diciptakan Allah SWT dari zat sejenis api atau cahaya, sama dengan asal penciptaan Malaikat. Hanya saja, ketika Allah SWT memerintahkan agar semua mahluk bersujud kepada Adam a.s., hanya Iblis yang menolak perintah Allah SWT. Sebab itu dia dinamakan pembangkang (Abasa, Iblis).
Dari ayat tersebut dapat diketahui jika Iblis tadinya berada di antara para Malaikat, namun karena membangkang, derajatnya diturunkan sehingga dia termasuk ke dalam golongan orang-orang kafir.
