One of my favorite books is The Power of One and I had this custom wooden piece done that is outside of my kids’ rooms that reads:

“The vines are people who are afraid of originality, of new thinking. Most people you encounter will be vines; when you are a young plant they are very dangerous. Always listen to yourself, Peekay. It is better to be wrong than simply to follow convention. If you are wrong, no matter, you have learned something and you grow stronger. If you are right, you have taken another step toward a fulfilling life.”

I want my kids to understand what this means and I also try to keep this in mind with my family – my parents, Chris, and everyone else in my life who I consider family. We are all on our journeys. We all need to be authentic and genuine to ourselves while also respecting that others are on their own journeys. This concept of “living our personal legends” is really important to me and I’m really fortunate that Chris understands and accepts my passion for this. I feel I’m really wired in a unique way and I try, try, try to keep this front of my mind. It can be all too easy to start being swallowed up with comparisons, expectations of society, definitions of what others consider to be successful and acceptable, but you have got to stay true to yourself and you’ve got to give people the grace to do the same.
