Flagrate berasal dari bahasa latin Flagrante yang artinya membakar.
Sementara efek yang dikeluarkan berbeda tergantung medianya. Jika di udara, akan membentuk garis api dalam bentuk tertentu tulisan misalnya. Sedangkan jika di aplikasikan terhadap benda padat, akan membuat benda tersebut panas dan membakar kulit saat disentuh. Posisinya harus fokus, gerakan wand sambil mengucapkan pelafalan mantranya. Perapalannya flagrate adalah 'fle-GRAY-tee', penekanan pada hruf GRAY.
Mantra ini termasuk dalam kategori mantra Hex, karena membutuhkan perantara untuk melukai korban. Efek dari mantra ini tidak langsung mengenai korban, jarang ada mantra yang bisa menangkis flagrate. Dengan kata lain, mantra ini tidak memiliki counter spell.
