General Lab Report Etiquette
____________________________________
DO NOT use contractions (don't, won't, can't)
DO NOT use first person (me, we, our, I...)
DO NOT write using past tense (ex. when writing methodology, 4mL is added instead of 4mL was added)
Generally, start new sections on a new page unless the new section comes before 3/4 of the page down
Graphs and tables should be large and keep ones that relate to each other together/on the same page. Graphs in math are usually the entire page - when writing formal reports they may be allowed to be smaller. Usually graphs are found in an appendix (at the back, and they are referred to in the writing as "...in Figure 1 (see Appendix 1)..."
Graphs should also have axis labels, a title that describes the relationship shown (not just "Part A Data") and will have figure labels/captions explaining what the graph depicts
You MUST include references if you looked up any information especially in the introduction and discussion. When you have used this information, there should be an embedded citation in your writing as well. For example, (Tavone, 2017). In university assignments, you will likely have an embedded citation after every sentence or so! You MUST give credit to your source!
SENTENCE STRUCTURE!!: Avoid run on sentences or sentence fragments. Use capitals, periods, commas, semi-colons etc properly. Refrain from using "and/but/because" as a sentence starter. Avoid short forms, write out everything fully (etc, ex.)
Have someone read over your writing - even if they are not familiar with the topic. They will be able to point out grammatical errors. You should also read what you have written out loud - you will catch things that sound odd and that should tell you it does not read well.
DO NOT use "prove" when you are referring to your results and the original hypothesis. Science is never proven - it just supports the hypothesis. You can say support/does not support, accept or reject based on findings etc.
Your hypothesis can be longer than a sentence but still follows the "If ... then" format. Be sure to include what you expect to happen as a result of the set of environmental conditions. Be sure to expand on the role of the variable - in this case you should have mentioned catalase and how it should behave in the various temperature conditions.
