Philip English was a french immigrant that was born in the year 1651 and died during the year 1736. In 1651, Philip married a lady name Mary Hollingsworth, the daughter of a wealthy man, William Hollingsworth and his wife Eleanor Hollingsworth. Philip grew up to be a rich man. During the next two decades, Philip owned a money making trading company. He owned a group of twenty one ships, fourteen buildings, and a warehouse in Salem. Philip was accused of witchcraft, he was then arrested. A warrant was issued for English arrest on April 30, 1692, but he was nowhere to be found. Another warrant had to be issued on May 6. After Philip was accused of witchcraft , four hundred people died. People believed that Philip killed those four hundred people. In March of the year 1692, Philip has been selected to be the towns selectmen.
In 1692, both Mary and Philip were accused and imprisoned during the Salem Witch Trial. The couple were able to escape to New York, where they remained for two years. While in New York, Philip received periodic report of the continuing mysteries in Salem. In 1693, the mysteries finally ended. They returned to Salem in 1694. When the couple returned, the found out that Sheriff Coran had confiscated most of their property. Their home was also constructed in the year 1685.
Mary English showed up in front of a large crowd at the Salem Meeting house on April 22, 1692 to answer a complaint of witchcraft. Mary was taken into custody. On May 12, she was transferred to a jail in Boston to await trial. Philip fled to Boston, trying to free Mary. Mary was accused of witchcraft because her husband, Philip, was a native french speaker. Philip was also sent to jail with his wife. The Boston jailer freed the couple every morning with Mary and English promising that they'd return at night to sleep in the jail. In 1693, with the hysteria finally ended, the couple returned to Salem. Mary was once again pregnant. She had her baby boy, but had a stroke and died. Mary was 46 years old when she died. Philip then returned to his shipping business.
