Satyrs and nymphs are two extremes in the Greek mythology which are united only by their instinctive natures in regards to lust as they present an optical contrast
The nymph is generally very beautiful and physically perfect and are usually depicted with light imagery with delicate colours and an idealised female form
Similar to the Roman god Venus
Satyr are usually are very masculine in shape and generally are much more deformed physical qualities such as having horns and tails. They are portrayed with dark imagery and harsh colours
Watteau produced lots of similar themed historical paintings with mythological scenes that are oval shaped which was unconventional at that time
In preparations for this painting, there were at least three sketches in which he focused on figuring out the positioning of the satyr
The location of the panting wasn’t exactly clear before 1857 and it first appeared again in an auction of the collection of Theodor Peaturea who most likely bought the painting from Watteau
Then the Louvre acquired it after the purchase of it from the auction died the next year
