Your interview with your step-mother was really interesting and I can imagine that you got a lot out of getting to know her in that way! That would be such a difficult situation to be in, having four kids and an addict as your husband. Personally, I would feel completely helpless, but I am so glad that she had such a strong support system in her friends to be able to defy her parents and step away from the disaster that her life had become.
It really surprises me just how smoothly her divorce seemed to go! I know that it was much worse than it sounds now, but the transition with her kids, job, and future life really seemed like they were not much to tackle. The financial part and the let down of the children would definitely be difficult. As someone who eventually wants to be a stay-at-home mother, I cannot imagine just how horrible the downfall of my husband would be. Your step-mother seems like a very strong woman.
Has the father tried to reach out to the four kids at any point in the last 10 years? How has your step-mother noticed the cut-off divorce from her ex-husband effected her four children, both short and long-term?
