Next stop on my journey through Rome is the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, probably one of Rome's most iconic landmarks. Just like the Pantheon I visited yesterday, this building has been standing for almost two thousand years, although an earthquake in 1231 AD caused a portion of the south-western wall to collapse. During it's use between 80 AD to 404 AD it would be filled with tens of thousands of people along with the Emperor himself to watch all sorts of violent games between gladiators and executions of criminals. The Colosseum was built on a site where one of Emperor Nero's palaces once stood, construction began in 72 AD during the rule of Emperor Vespasian but was not completed until 80 AD during the reign of his son Titus. The structure itself is a massive oval, 188m long, 156m wide and stands 45m tall. Each floor uses a different type of column, Doric being used on the first, Ionic on the second and finally Corinthian on the third. The building's materials consist of limestone, brick concrete and tufa. Inside
Right beside the Colosseum stands the Arch of Constantine I, built in 315 AD and standing over 21 meters stall and 26 meters wide. It celebrates Emperor Constantine's victory at the battle of Milvian Bridge on the 28th of October 312 AD. The monument itself is made of marble and it's main features are it's three arches and Corinthian columns. Over the middle arch is an inscription praising Constantine's victory while all sorts of sculptures are placed around; some show mythical beings such as Apollo and Hercules while some show previous Roman emperors such as Trajan and Domitian.
