voodoo sama ilmu santet yang ada di Indonesia itu sama, tapi voodoo suatu kepercayaan tertua Afrika yang telah ada sejak awal peradaban manusia. kepercayaan tersebut sudah ada selama lebih dari 10.000 tahun.
asal-usul vodou bersamaan dengan pengembangan kerajaan Ketu, Tado, Notsie dan Allada (sekarang Benin,Togo dan Tenggara Ghana) yang kemudian menjadi sebuah kerajaan terkuat dan prestisius di Afrika Barat.para penganut Voodoo atau yang sering disebut Vodouists melakukan peribadatan kepada roh-roh, yang artinya mereka lebih mengarah ke Dinamisme dan Animisme. lalu ada lebih dari 30 kelompok etnis Afrika yang berperan dalam mengembangkan voodoo, bahkan sebelum kedatangan mereka ke Haiti.
sementara itu, vodou Dahomey di Afrika Barat adalah ibu dari semua bentuk sinkretis vodoun (voodoo) yang dipraktekkan di Dunia Baru.
