BOOK 1
•CHAPTER ONE•
In the village, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) runs in to tell Milah (Rachel Shelley) that his weaving days are over and shows off a letter that he is going to the front lines of the Ogre wars. However, Milah tries to convince him not to because she thinks it is too dangerous, but he says it is the chance he has been waiting for his entire life, to prove he's not like his father who was a coward. Milah, despite her concerns about his decision, allows him to go and says that when he returns they can start a family. As Rumplestiltskin walks into camp to begin his duties, a soldier tells him to guard a crate with his life, saying it's something that can turn the tide against the enemies. After hearing a person calling out his name, Rumplestiltskin uncovers a cage to see a child (Brighid Fleming), who happens to be a Seer who was thirsty and wanted a drink of water. She tells him that she is a seer and she can predict his future, including the fact that Milah and he will have a child, but his actions would leave his child fatherless. She says when he sees the cows he will know she speaks the truth. Rumple calls her a liar and covers her with the cover again. Hours later, as Rumplestiltskin is watching the wounded from the front lines being brought to the camp, a soldier says that they are lucky but Rumplestiltskin says that they would beg to differ. The man says that the only way people get sent home is if they are wounded and can't fight, hence they are lucky because they won't be killed by the Ogres. When another soldier announces that the duke said they will be riding into battle instead of marching, he tells everyone to grab a "cow" (a saddle made of cow leather), which horrifies Rumple as he realizes the Seer's predictions are coming true. When he goes to the witch's crate, now that he believes her, he removes the sheet to find the cage empty. He then sees a hammer and cripples himself with it by hitting his foot, leaving him wounded.
Rumplestiltskin later goes home to his son, whom Milah named Baelfire. Unfortunately, another prediction that the Seer mentioned would come true when Milah tells him that Baelfire will have to live with the shame of being Rumplestiltskin's son. Milah also becomes extremely upset upon learning that Rumplestiltskin injured himself so he could see his son. Despite his story about the seer, Milah tells Rumplestiltskin that he is just like his father, a coward. Rumplestiltskin says that he doesn't want Baelfire to grow up like him, fatherless. However, Milah tells him that he should have fought and died in the war. She then leaves the baby with Rumplestiltskin and, as predicted, eventually leaves him to be with Hook. Rumplestilskin then breaks his promise never to leave Baelfire fourteen years later, as projected by the seer.
As Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) returns home, he discovers Baelfire is all alone. Realizing that his wife, Milah (Rachel Shelley), has gone down to a village pub, Rumplestiltskin and Baelfire decide to confront her there, only to discover that Milah has been drinking with a group of pirates. It turns out that Milah is not happy with being married to Rumplestiltskin because she sees him as a coward, but Baelfire manages to convince her to return home. Unfortunately, the next day, Rumplestiltskin learns that Milah has been abducted by the pirates. He arrives at their ship to meet Killian Jones (Colin O'Donoghue), the captain of the vessel, and asks that he turn Milah over to him. Killian then offers Rumplestiltskin a chance to duel him, only to let Rumplestiltskin's cowardice get the best of him.
During the ogre wars, children are conscripted to military service at age 14. The Duke's men gather young soldiers with the help of "The Dark One" who possesses great magical power. Rumpelstiltskin's son, Baelfire (Dylan Schmid), will turn 14 in three days and he is desperate to keep his child out of battle. As father and son flee from the village, they are confronted by the Duke's men. They mock Rumpelstiltskin for running away when he was supposed to serve, and reveal that his cowardice caused his wife to leave him. Rumpelstiltskin begs for his son's life but he has nothing to offer but loyalty. The Duke's chief soldier commands Rumpelstiltskin to kiss his boot, but when the desperate man bends down the soldier kicks him to the ground. The old beggar (Brad Dourif) by the side of the road sees this and offers the pair assistance since they spared him a coin. The beggar tells Rumpelstiltskin a secret, the Duke possesses a dagger that allows him to command The Dark One and all his power. If Rumpelstiltskin steals the dagger, he will control The Dark One himself. If he kills The Dark One with the dagger, he will possess his magic. Rumpelstiltskin sets fire to the Duke's castle (in a parallel with Mr. Gold's actions) and steals the dagger which reads the name of The Dark One, "Zoso."
Baelfire is worried about his father's plan to wield the dagger's power but Rumpelstiltskin just sends him home. Rumpelstiltskin summons Zoso and declares he is The Dark One's master. Zoso is not impressed and wonders aloud what the timid little man would have him do. Rumpelstiltskin's answer "Die!" He kills The Dark One who reveals himself to be the beggar from before. Zoso laughs and tells Rumpelstiltskin that "All magic comes with a price." Rumpelstiltskin becomes the new Dark One and his name is now inscribed on the dagger. He returns home and uses his power to save his son from the Duke's men. Baelfire is terrified of this man who no longer seems like his father at all.
•CHAPTER TWO•
In the Enchanted Forest, Rumplestilstkin comes home with a gift, which is a knife for Baelfire. However, Baelfire doesn't want gifts, he wants to leave, go out, and have friends. Unfortunately, Rumplestiltskin insists he cannot leave their house for his own safety since he is now the anointed "Dark One" before he roams off. But hours later Rumplestiltskin comes home and discovers Baelfire missing. He tracks him to a village, where the villagers explain that their children are missing as well, lured out of their beds by a Pied Piper in the night. This gives Rumplestiltskin a plan to comfront the individual as he waits in the night until he hears the piper's call and moments later witnesses children climbing out windows and follow the music. Rumplestiltskin then discovers a location and sees the children masked and costumed, dancing wildly around a fire.
He then tries to find Baelfire amongst the children, then confronts the Pied Piper, who is revealed to be Peter Pan, who have known of Rumplestiltskin in the past, saying it has been a long time, then explains that only boys who feel unloved can hear his pipe, which is why Rumplestiltskin can hear him. Pan says they can ask Baelfire if he wants to go with him, or stay with his father, But Rumplestiltskin finds Baelfire, and uses his magic to take Baelfire back to their home. Rumplestiltskin tries to explain that Pan wanted to hurt him, as Rumplestiltskin has known Pan since he was a boy and that he betrayed him. Baelfire reveals Pan told him about the deal, that if he had been asked to go home, he would have. However his father didn't ask.
In the Enchanted Forest, Baelfire (Dylan Schmid) plays with his ball until it rolls in front of a cart which knocks him down. The driver of the cart fearfully apologizes though Baelfire insists he is okay. Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) comes to check on his son who has a scraped knee. As punishment, he turns the driver into a snail and squashes him. Back at home, Rumpelstiltskin treats Baelfire's scrape but the boy refuses magic. Baelfire explains that everyone avoids him because they fear his father. Rumpelstiltskin explains that the only way to destroy his power would be killing him with his own dagger. The housekeeper overhears this, but being a mute, she does not respond. Baelfire asks his father if he could get rid of his power without hurting either one of them, would he do it. Rumpelstiltskin agrees, but he doubts that it is possible. The next day, Rumpelstiltskin encourages Baelfire to play with the other kids while he attends to some business in the woods. Baelfire deduces from the blood on his father's boot that he has killed their housekeeper to keep the dagger a secret. A friend of Baelfire's suggests he call on the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy), which he does. The fairy offers Baelfire a magic bean that will take them to a land where magic does not exist and his father would be human again. However this bean is the last one of its kind and will only work once. When Baelfire goes to his father with the plan, Rumpelstiltskin is skeptical, but his son reminds him that he promised.
Father and son take the bean into the woods and throw it on the ground. A vortex opens which will take them to the land with no magic. Baelfire jumps in while holding his father's hand, but Rumpelstiltskin resists, saying he cannot go through with it. His son calls him a coward and lets go. The vortex closes, taking Baelfire away and leaving Rumpelstiltskin behind. He realizes he has made a terrible mistake and calls on the Blue Fairy for help. The Blue Fairy tells Rumpelstiltskin that was his only chance and there is no other way to the realm where his son has gone. When Rumpelstiltskin suggests a curse might take him to Baelfire, the fairy's hesitation tells him he is onto something, but she is opposed to the idea, because she does not believe that he is willing to pay the price of the curse. Rumpelstiltskin lashes out at the fairy for taking his son away, but she tells Rumpelstilskin that he drove his own son away. Rumpelstiltskin vows that he will not rest until he creates such a curse and finds his son.
After falling through the portal in the Enchanted Forest, Baelfire lands in Victorian[1] London.
Several years later, Rumplestiltskin, now the Dark One, sits at a tavern where he is approached by a black market trader about a magic bean that can transport between worlds. Before that transaction can take place, Jones shows up, and as expected, Rumplestiltskin decides to confront him once again.
At the area near the docks, Jones tells Rumplestiltskin that Milah died years ago, so the two decide on a swordfight to the finish with Rumplestiltskin gaining the upper hand and finally defeating Jones. But just as he was about to use his power to rip Jones's heart out, Milah appears. It turned out that Milah was never dead and was living among the pirates as Jones's lover. She asks that their lives be spared in exchange for the bean. Milah explains that she wanted a life of adventure over Rumplestiltskin, who was upset that she would leave both him and their son behind. Milah does admit that she regrets leaving Baelfire but allowed her hatred of staying with Rumpelstiltskin to prevent her from thinking about Bae. Milah then throws the bean to Killian so Rumplestiltskin would keep his promise, but a furious Rumplestiltskin decides to make them pay by ripping her heart out and killing her instantly, followed by slicing off Jones's left hand, believing that he had the bean in his fist. Killian then stabs Rumplestiltskin with a hook, but to no effect, as the Dark One takes Jones's left hand and disappears in a puff of smoke. As it turns out, Rumplestiltskin was once again tricked by Jones, who kept the bean in the other hand, then brought out the kidnapped black market trader to make sure the bean worked and after throwing it into the ocean, a portal opened up. Revealing his name to be William Smee, the trader agrees to join Jones's crew as they prepare to enter the portal for a place called Neverland.
•CHAPTER THREE•
After falling through the portal in the Enchanted Forest, Baelfire lands in Victorian[1] London. After six months living on the streets, he steals bread from a house and is caught by young resident Wendy Darling. She takes pity on him and hides him in the home for a period of weeks. Wendy's parents catch them while Wendy is bringing food to Bae, but Mrs. Darling invites him to stay with the family after he reveals he is an orphan.
One night, Wendy tells Bae that a magical shadow has appeared nightly since Bae came to the house, inviting her to a fantastical place called Neverland, where children are free from the restrictions of parents. Bae warns Wendy and her brothers against magic, revealing that he came from a magical land where magic destroyed his family. Wendy ignores Bae's warning and leaves with the shadow that night. In the morning Wendy returns and tells them that although Neverland is wondrous, the children cry for their parents at night and the shadow prevents them from leaving. She has only been brought back because the shadow wants a boy instead and will return that night for one of her brothers. They attempt to defend themselves, but the shadow proves too powerful and is about to capture Wendy's youngest brother, Michael, when Bae offers himself in Michael's place. Confident that saving the Darling family from magic is the right thing to do, he thanks Wendy for her kindness and is carried away. As they approach Neverland, Bae distracts the shadow with a match, forcing it to drop him in the water. He is then pulled aboard the Jolly Roger by Hook (Colin O'Donoghue).
In the hours after they pulled Baelfire out of the water and onto the Jolly Roger, Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), tells Mr. Smee that he still wants to avenge Milah's death by going after Rumplestilskin, becomes intrigued by their latest catch, not knowing that Bae is Milah and Rumple's son. While Baelfire is not happy being rescued by a pirate, Hook, who now has found out who his father is, thinks he may have found the opportunity. While they ponder whether or not to send him back to Neverland, Hook then tells Smee that Bae would make an excellent pirate for his crew. But it appears that the Lost Boys have shown up at the Jolly Roger, eager to get their hands on Baelfire, warning Hook the Shadow will tear his ship apart if they do not hand over Baelfire. But they come up empty-handed thanks to Bae holding his breath in a secret compartment.
As the two bond, it appears that they formed a good relationship, with Hook showing Bae how to navigate the ship, even carving markings to show him the directions. Hook asks Bae about his family, who told him that his mother was killed by a pirate, and that his father changed after he became the Dark One, while Hook reveals that he also lost his father, who abandoned him so he wouldn't be captured by the authorities. Later on, after Bae recognizes Milah's picture after looking at his desk, he turns on Hook, who now knows that he is Rumplestiltskin's son. Hook then explains to Bae that Rumplestiltskin was the one that killed Milah and that she regretted leaving Bae. Despite knowing the truth, Bae is still angry with Hook for splitting up his family. Bae tells Hook that he wants to go back to the Darling family, but Hook says that they cannot go back, then responds with, "This ship can be your home, your family ... it's not too late to start over. I can change, Bae, for you." Unfortunately, Bae turns him down, believing that Hook is only thinking of himself. But moments later, the Lost Boys show up to grab Bae, because Hook has made a deal with them. As they take off with Bae, Hook feels that he disappointed himself by giving up Bae, so he crosses out the marking he made.
Later, the Lost Ones compare Bae to a drawing and, since he is not a match, declare that he will live but will be held captive. The drawing shows that Henry Mills is the individual sought by the shadow; ironically, they got him, but before conception and birth. The leader says that he will show up, as "Peter Pan never fails."
Estimated time Captain Hook returns to the Enchanted Forest in order to find a weapon he heard from Baelfire that can kill Rumplestiltskin.
Years later, Rumplestiltskin walks into a clearing as the Seer (Shannon Lucio) appears to say that she's been expecting him now that the predictions have come true. However, he now wants details (and shows he means it by choking her neck), but she says knowing would have done nothing and he was powerless to escape even knowing, since she knew Rumple came to find Baelfire. So she uses the eyes on her hands to tell him how to find Baelfire, and Rumple tells her not to leave out a single detail. The Seer says it will take many years, require a curse, and it would take everything from the Enchanted Forest, but he will neither cast nor break the curse, and that someone else will. Rumple says that the information is not good enough, but she says there is one way to see who it is, so he places his hands on her future seeing eyes that are on her hands, but he can't see anything, saying it's too much. The witch says that in time he will, and after he removes his hands away from her, the Seer tells him that she tried to give him the power so that she wouldn't have to have it anymore. Before she dies, the Seer tells him that he will be reunited with Baelfire, but in an unexpected way, because the person that will lead him to Baelfire in the future will be an extraordinary young boy who will also be Rumplestiltskin's undoing. After she dies, Rumplestiltskin, now knowing about what will happen next, says, "Then I'll just have to kill him."he later decides to become a deal maker with his new powers.
•CHAPTER FOUR•
in the Enchanted Forest we discover a young pickpocket fellow named Jiminy, a boy who desires the chance to be a person who wants to do good. However he is forced, by his father (Harry Groener) and mother (Carolyn Hennesy), to participate in their cons. After he finishes collecting the stolen goods, he returns the items to his parents and tells them that he desires to leave the family business. Unfortunately, as years go by, the now adult Jiminy (Raphael Sbarge) is still aiding his parents, who now come up with excuses to keep him from leaving. He also runs into a young boy who tells him to follow his conscience. One night, Jiminy pays a visit to see Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and delivers goods to him. After Rumpelstiltskin asks Jiminy what he wants, he gives him a tonic that will set him free from his parents, but it will cost him.
Later that evening, Jiminy and his parents pay a visit to a couple and use a ruse by that they escaped a plague and need a place to stay. They use the story to convince the couple to give up their items, so they plunder the couple of their belongings by exchanging a cure tonic for their livelihood, and Jiminy hands the tonic over to them. As they take off with the goods, Jiminy feels like he has betrayed the couple, and then discovers that his father switched the bottles. As Jiminy raced back to the couples' home, he is shocked to discover that the couple has been turned into dolls after drinking the tonic, and as his parents prepare to take the dolls, the same young boy whom Jiminy met earlier shows up and looks at Jiminy as to what happened to his parents.
Having realized what he had done, Jiminy looks at the stars and begins to make a wish. He receives an answer from The Blue Fairy, who shows up to give him his one true wish, which would come from hearing the sound of crickets chirping, resulting in Jiminy becoming a cricket. He was also told by The Blue Fairy that he has a chance to help someone in the future, starting with the young boy, who would grow up to be Gepetto.
•CHAPTER FIVE•
A young Cora (Rose McGowan) scolds her father for falling asleep when he was supposed to make a delivery of flour. Cora travels to deliver the flour in his stead. A girl named Princess Eva trips Cora, causing her to spill the flour. King Xavier (Joaquim de Almeida) refuses to pay for the flour and demands Cora apologize. Begrudgingly, Cora falls to her knees and begs for forgiveness through gritted teeth.
That night, Cora sneaks into the masked ball held for King Xavier's son Prince Henry (Zak Santiago) where she unknowingly criticizes the king's actions to the prince as an act of selling off his son Henry to a bride to solve the kingdom's financial problems. They are interrupted by the king, who recognizes Cora despite her disguise. She chastises him for what he's doing, but he reminds her that even though he is suffering financially, he is still of a better social status than her. Out of anger, Cora boasts that she can spin straw into gold, but refuses to because the king insulted her. King Xavier presents her to the ball with her claim. Cora manages to convince the king that it takes time. King Xavier has her locked in a tower full of straw to spin by morning, or be executed.
As Cora considers jumping out the tower window, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) appears to her. He demonstrates that he can spin straw into gold, and will do it for her if she signs a contract, where she must give up her first-born child in return. Cora instead demands that Rumplestiltskin teach her how to not only spin straw into gold, but also how to do magic. The deal on the contract is changed from Cora giving up her first-born child, to giving Rumplestiltskin his child.
As Cora struggles, Rumplestiltskin teaches her how magic is channeled through emotion rather than thought. That one has to feel so strongly about something, that they would do anything. When Cora asks Rumplestiltskin if he ever wanted something that bad, he reveals to her that he did once. When he was humiliated and forced to kiss a man's boots in front of his son. Cora wants revenge against King Xavier and the rest of the royals for mistreating her. She wants them all to bow before her. As she reveals her desire to Rumplestiltskin, she successfully turns the straw into gold. The two also begin an affair.
Cora presents the gold to the King, who keeps his promise and arranges for Cora to marry Henry.
Cora admires her wedding dress when Rumplestiltskin shows up. She begins to question if she truly has everything she wanted, when she turns to Rumplestiltskin. Even though she's marrying Henry, she would be fifth in line to the throne, a position she is certain would not come without bloodshed. She decides to take King Xavier's heart and run away with Rumplestiltskin. The two agree to meet later that night.
That evening, Cora meets the King. She talks to him of love, which he admits he never cared for, calling it a weakness. He talks to her of the superiority of power over love and gives her a choice: either marry Henry and gain great power, or run away with the imp (revealing he knew of Cora's and Rumplestiltskin's liaisons). Cora returns to her room with a chest, and inside is the first heart she's ever stolen.
Cora meets Rumplestiltskin as planned later that night. He asks if she took King Xavier's heart, and she replies that she could have, but she didn't. She goes on to tell him that she is marrying Prince Henry instead. He begins to question whose heart is in the box, and Cora reveals she ripped her own heart out; she reminds him it was he who told her to eliminate any obstacle in her way, and she believes her heart was an obstacle. Rumplestiltskin grows furious, claiming that she never loved him and that she broke their contract. She brings up that the contract was changed, that she would bring him his child, and any child she has would not be his.
Months later, Cora holds an infant in her hands, a girl. King Xavier asks for the child's name, and Cora answers that her name is Regina. "For one day, she will be queen." Cora raises the infant Regina into the air, and the kingdom fall to their knees bowing to her, giving Cora the satisfaction she sought. She has finally gotten her revenge.
Queen Eva (Rena Sofer) makes plans for a ball to celebrate the birthday of her daughter, Snow White (Bailee Madison). When Snow sees that a servant, Johanna (Lesley Nicol), has tried on Eva's heirloom tiara, she admonishes the woman until Eva reminds Snow that royalty and the people of the kingdom are entitled to the same dignity. Eva suddenly collapses and it soon becomes clear that she is deathly ill. A royal doctor is unable to heal her, and Johanna suggests Snow make a wish to the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy). In the woods, the Blue Fairy appears to Snow and explains that good magic cannot overcome death. However, she agrees to make an exception to the rules that bind fairies, and gives Snow a magical candle that will save her mother's life in exchange for the life of another person. She must hold the lighted candle over the heart of the person whose life she wants to take and whisper their name. Aghast, Snow reveals to her mother what has happened and explains that she is unwilling to kill someone and therefore cannot save her life. Eva tells Snow she is proud of her for her strength, and promises to be with her as long as she holds goodness in her heart. She dies.
Snow attends her mother's funeral. After Johanna escorts her from the chapel, the Blue Fairy enters but is revealed to actually be Cora (Barbara Hershey) in disguise. She declares that, having poisoned Eva, she will also destroy her legacy by turning Snow White's heart to darkness.
•CHAPTER SIX•
In the Enchanted Forest, young Regina (Parrilla) rides her horse as her father (Tony Perez) watches. However, her mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey), approaches and scolds her, telling her she rides like a man and she should use a saddle. Regina laughs, telling her that she was just riding for fun, but Cora was not amused. Daniel (Noah Bean), the stable boy interrupts the conversation by offering Regina a saddle, but Regina says she’s done riding for the day, scolds him for interrupting, and begins to stomp away only to have Cora bring her back by using magic. An angry Regina tells her to stop using her magic to control her, but Cora responds by stating that she will stop using magic when she starts being an obedient daughter. With that, Regina promises to be good. It appears that Cora wants Regina to lead a life filled with riches and a high status, but Regina doesn't care about status, she just wants to be herself. Later that evening, Regina apologizes to Daniel for snapping at him and then she kisses him.The next day, Regina rides out to see Daniel in the woods where he wants Regina to tell her parents about their love. Regina explains to Daniel that she is afraid of her mother’s magic, to which Daniel replies that true love is the most powerful magic of all and it will overcome anything. The next day, Regina rides out to see Daniel in the woods where he wants Regina to tell her parents about their love. Regina explains to Daniel that she is afraid of her mother’s magic, to which Daniel replies that true love is the most powerful magic of all and it will overcome anything. They are interrupted by a young girl on a runaway horse, screaming in terror and prompting Regina to save her. The rider is a young Snow White (Bailee Madison), saying she’ll never ride again but Regina tells her that she needs to get back onto the horse and to face her fears. Later on, Regina changes into her riding clothes, but Cora uses her powers to change the outfit into a ball gown and explains that King Leopold (Richard Schiff) is coming to thank her for rescuing Snow White. King Leopold comes in, explaining that Snow White does not have a mother and hasn’t, yet, met anyone who has taken an interest in his daughter. As a result, he asks for Regina's hand in marriage. Her shock takes over, but before she can decline, her mother answers yes for her. However, later that night, Regina runs to Daniel, asking for his hand in marriage, then explains the situation with King Leopold and Cora and cries at the thought of marrying the king. Regina explains that the only way out is to run, to leave the palace, to get married, and to never look back. Regina swears that all she cares about is Daniel and that being queen means nothing, but Daniel says they have to do it properly, giving her a ring off of a saddle and then they kiss. Suddenly, Snow White opens the doors and walks into the stable and is surprised at the lovers' embrace, then cries and runs away. Regina chases after her into the woods and manages to catch up to Snow White after she trips and falls. When Snow White asks why she was kissing Daniel, Regina explains that she doesn't love Snow White's father and tries to explain how true love works to her, saying that true love is the most powerful magic of all. Snow smiles after the explanation but Regina orders her to keep this secret from Cora. Snow White promises to keep the secret.
The next day, Snow White is looking at the flowers. She is reaching up to grab one when Cora comes in and tells her to be gentle. As the two talk, Cora tells Snow White not to fear her and is happy for the two, then asks the little girl why Regina has pulled away from her, knowing that she’s unhappy even though Cora says she would do anything to make Regina happy. Snow tells her how it was hard to lose her mother and Cora does not want to lose Regina, all she wants is her happiness. Snow tells her to not make Regina get married, that she doesn't love her father and that she loves someone else, and that no one should lose someone to another. In what would be a major mistake that began this hatred in the first place, Snow then tells Cora about Daniel. That night, Regina runs into the stable where Daniel is ready to go to make their getaway. They embrace just before Cora finds them and uses her magic to lock them in the stable. Cora is hurt that they would run off without saying goodbye, but Regina says she’s impossible to talk to. Cora says she made a lot of sacrifices to give Regina the life she has now, which leads to an argument. After that exchange, Cora says she will not stop her and Regina hugs her with thanks, then takes Daniel aside to tell him to always do what's best for his children. Unfortunately, after he is embraced by Cora, she rips out his heart and crushes it (in the same manner that Regina used to kill Sheriff Graham). Regina falls to his side and asks her mother why she has done this, to which Cora tells her that it was because it was her happy ending (the same words Regina would later use the day Snow White and Prince Charming got married). After Regina yells and screams of how she loved Daniel, Cora tells her how love is weakness. Cora then tells her to clean herself up and wipe away the tears because now she is going to be queen. As Regina is being fitted for her wedding dress, Snow White walks in and tells her that she is the fairest of them all. Snow tells Regina about how she told her mother about Daniel. As Regina listens in horror, she turns and Snow notices how upset she is and she apologizes, saying she didn't want Regina to just lose her mother like she lost hers. Snow White asks Regina if she was mad, but Regina pretends to be happy and tells her no stating that she's happy that they're both going to be a family. But after Snow White leaves, Regina's behavior starts to change. Cora walks into the room, sending Snow away to pack and says she is so proud of Regina, who guessed that Cora knew the king was traveling and the steed that Snow was on didn’t go wild on its own. Regina then tells Cora that she should have let Snow White die on her horse.
In the Enchanted Forest, during a horse ride, a young Regina (Lana Parrilla) is prevented from running away by her mother Cora (Barbara Hershey) via magic. Cora wants to make sure that Regina goes through with the wedding to King Leopold and states that Regina is only nervous about having the power that a queen is given, but Regina tells her mother that she wants to be free. Cora replies by saying that power is freedom. After having a daydream in which she strangles a young Snow White (Bailee Madison), Regina tells her father Henry (Tony Perez) about her fear of becoming like Cora. He then explains to her about Cora's past, in which she met a man who gave Cora a book of spells. Later that night, Regina takes the book from under Cora's pillow and summons Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), the book's owner. Rumplestiltskin reveals that he had known Regina since she was very young and is surprised that she is kind and compassionate, unlike her family trait. When Regina asks him how to deal with Cora, Rumplestiltskin gives her a gift: a looking-glass that acts as a portal to another world.
On the day of the wedding, Regina tries to push Cora into the mirror but fails at her first attempt, but with the help of Rumplestiltskin, Regina succeeds in the second try and the glass shatters. Now that she was free of Cora, Regina decides to flee only to have Rumplestiltskin stop her and ask if she liked using magic. When Regina says yes, Rumplestiltskin offers his services to help her learn about magic, on the condition that she will owe him a favor.
•CHAPTER SEVEN•
In the Enchanted Forest, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) is preparing to teach Regina (Lana Parrilla) everything she needs to know about magic. It is not as easy as it seems, especially after she struggles to take the heart out of a unicorn. She protests over doing this, but he tells Regina, “Nothing is innocent,” before taking the unicorn's heart out himself. He also tells her not even magic will bring her fiancé Daniel (Noah Bean) back to life.
In a black-and-white land (earth, said by Dr Viktor Frankenstein at 3:44), Dr. Viktor Frankenstein (David Anders) and his father, Alphonse (Gregory Itzin), toast the Silver Cross that has been awarded to Alphonse's younger son, Gerhardt (Chad Michael Collins), a military officer. Alphonse then gives Viktor a military commission that will require him to give up his scientific research, which he will no longer finance. Later, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle)--who appears in color--observes Viktor telling Gerhardt that he will find a way to continue his research. Rumplestiltskin then appears in Viktor's lab and offers him a vast amount of gold if he can teach him how to restore life. Viktor accepts the offer.Gerhardt finds Viktor digging up a body from a graveyard to use for his experiments. They are interrupted by a guard, who fatally shoots Gerhardt. Viktor attempts to revive Gerhardt in the laboratory, but the procedure burns his heart into charcoal. Alphonse discovers what has happened and disowns Viktor. Rumplestiltskin appears again and offers Viktor a magical heart in exchange for "putting on a show" for his "friend," Regina.
In the Enchanted Forest,The Mad Hatter/Jefferson (Sebastian Stan) later arrives to overhear the two and shows off a crystal ball that Rumplestiltskin has requested. Rumplestiltskin, however, had told the Mad Hatter that he actually needs “the slippers” to enter a realm with no magic, since the Mad Hatter’s hat can only travel between realms with magic. Now that they meet for the first time, Jefferson tells Regina he has heard of a “wizard” who can help her bring back Daniel. They travel to see this person, who prefers to be called a doctor. As he examines Daniel's body, the doctor tells Regina that he is an ideal candidate for his “experimental” procedure, though, he still needs an enchanted heart, as normal ones cannot withstand the procedure. Regina lets him pick one from Cora’s vault of living hearts. That night, the doctor begins his work on restoring Daniel to life, but announces his failure. This devastates Regina, who returns to being Rumplestiltskin’s pupil and demonstrates her readiness by ripping the heart out of his new protegée, crushing it to prove her advancement. It is revealed that Rumplestiltskin was actually in league with the doctor, who exchanged the strong heart for the “monster” he got in Regina, and the Mad Hatter, who allowed him safe passage back.
After receiving the heart, Viktor successfully brings Gerhardt back to life. Alphonse is initially pleased, but becomes dismayed when he discovers Gerhardt is now an animalistic "monster." He assaults Viktor, which prompts Gerhardt to attack Alphonse. Viktor stands by and allows Gerhardt to beat him to death, after which Gerhardt becomes distraught and runs off. Some time later, Viktor visits Gerhardt, whom he keeps in a cell. Gerhardt attacks him, but then recognizes him and is traumatized yet again. Viktor puts a gun to Gerhardt's head, but cannot bring himself to pull the trigger, even after Gerhardt himself pulls the gun back into position for the fatal shot. Viktor declares he will find a way to save Gerhardt.
Having grown tired of taking magic lessons to the point of missing them, as well as feeling unloved by her husband and claiming that she feels like a prisoner, Regina is confronted by Rumplestiltskin, who is checking on her since she missed her lessons and tells her she can't flee from her fate, and that her rage is all she has, and vanishes. Upset, Regina stands on a balcony, slamming at the railing. It breaks, and Regina falls, just in time to be saved by fairy named Tinkerbell. As Tinkerbell becomes friends with Regina over a meal, Tinkerbell offers her a chance to find what she really needs in her life, real love. However, Tinkerbell's good deed in saving Regina is not sitting well with the Blue Fairy after she returns to tell her, then scolds Tinkerbell and tells her to stop helping Regina because of her evil nature. Tinkerbell thinks this means she needs the most help, but The Blue Fairy tells her she must remain under supervision for the rest of her training. Unfortunately, Tinkerbell disobeys that order, and steals the pixie dust to help Regina.
Later that night, Tinkerbell brings along pixie dust as she and Regina fly off. Tinkerbell uses her dust to show Regina the way to her happy ending by chasing after it, and it leads to a tavern, where they see a man inside with a lion tattoo, covered in pixie dust. Tinkerbell encourages Regina to go in so she will finally be happy and let go of all her anger and sadness, but as Regina pulls open the door, she begins to panic and runs off instead. Tinkerbell goes to regina to see her in true love but regina lies and says it dident work and she's a horrible fairy and to leave at once.Tinkerbell flies away worried she's gonna get in trouble for stealing for regina, and is caught by the Blue Fairy, who tells her this was her second chance, but after what has happened she no longer believes in Tinkerbell. The Blue Fairy strips Tinkerbell of her wings and she falls to earth, making Tinkerbell a human, leading to the actions of what happend that would later be played out in Neverland and the Fairytale World.
•CHAPTER EIGHT•
In the Enchanted Forest, a fairy, Nova (Amy Acker), dreams of becoming a fairy godmother and escaping her day job: dust carrier. When she begins her trip, a bit of fairy dust falls onto the egg of a dwarf. As a result, the dwarf is born early, and seems different from his brothers. He is given a magic ax that names him Dreamy (Lee Arenberg). His seven brothers are Stealthy (Geoff Gustafson), Doc, Dopey, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, and Bashful
In The Enchanted Forest, King Leopold (Richard Schiff) finds a lamp and releases the Genie (Giancarlo Esposito) living inside, who grants the King three wishes. Having nothing more that he could want, the King uses his first wish to free the Genie and then uses his second wish to give away his third wish to the Genie. The King brings the Genie back to his castle and introduces him to Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) and the Queen (Lana Parrilla). When the Genie meets the latter, he is enamored. At his birthday party, the King declares Snow the greatest gift and the fairest in the land. The Queen departs, feeling rejected, but the Genie follows her out and gives her a mirror which lets her see herself as he sees her; as the fairest of all. The King finds the mirror and the Queen's diary revealing feelings for the man who gave it to her. He commands the Genie to find this man who has stolen the Queen's heart. As the Genie wonders what to do, the Queen's father, Henry (Tony Perez), shows up and gives him a box. Henry claims the contents will free his daughter. The Genie brings the box to his beloved Queen and they find deadly snakes from the Genie's home country. The Queen wants to free herself from her loveless marriage by suicide via the snake's venom. The Genie stops her and offers an alternative, a plot to kill the King. He sets the snakes upon the King in his bed which startles him awake. As the venom takes hold, the Genie confesses to giving the Queen the mirror as a token of his love and begs forgiveness. The King responds by saying that the Genie was right, he should have never made a wish. Then, the Genie informs the Queen her husband is dead and they can be together at last. The Queen reveals it was her plan all along to have the Genie kill the King, even using snakes that would be traced to him. The Genie, stung by this betrayal, uses his wish: to stay at the Queen's side and look upon her face always. He finds himself trapped in the mirror and the Queen notes that he did get his wish.
In the Enchanted Forest, the Evil Queen mourns the death of her husband, Snow White's father, although she herself is responsible for his death. Snow (Goodwin) and the Queen seemingly comfort each other over the loss. The Queen consults her magic mirror (Esposito) to ask how she can kill Snow, who is beloved by the people but a threat to her bid for the throne. She says that the king's knights will not kill his daughter, and the mirror tells her that she needs a huntsman. As Graham saw in his flashbacks, the Huntsman (Dornan) and his brother wolf seem to enjoy living a peaceful life in the woods. The Huntsman kills only for himself to live, and has no compassion for humans, who do not understand the wild. As the Huntsman and his wolf enter a tavern, the other patrons begin harassing him, prompting him to successfully defend himself. His performance is viewed in the magic mirror by the Queen, who is greatly impressed. She summons the Huntsman to offer him anything he wants on the condition that he brings her Snow's heart. He agrees to this deal, in return asking for the protection for all the wolves in the Enchanted Forest.
Snow and the Huntsman walk together in the forest, and she sees through his disguise and correctly guesses that he was sent by the Queen to kill her. Snow flees, but as the Huntsman catches up with her, he finds her writing a letter, which she requests he deliver to the queen after she is killed. The Huntsman takes out his knife, but instead of killing her, he fashions a whistle out of a bamboo stick, telling her that it will summon help and then telling her to run. The Huntsman then returns to the queen with a deer heart, hoping that she will not know the difference. The queen asks him to read her the letter, which is an apology for past wrongs as well as a request from Snow that her stepmother rule the kingdom with compassion. The queen burns the letter and takes the box with the heart in it to store in her vault. When she cannot open one of her storage safes, it proves that the Huntsman lied to her; the heart is not human. The Queen has her guards drag him down to the vault and she yanks his glowing heart out of his body. She tells the Huntsman that from now on he will be her pet and will do her bidding forever, and if he ever betrays her, all she has to do is squeeze.
•CHAPTER NINE•
In a small village in the Enchanted Forest, a happy, cloak-wearing Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory) flirts with her love Peter (Jesse Hutch) through her window before being called away by her Granny (Beverley Elliott), also known as the Widow Lucas. A group of villagers show up at their cottage door, planning to go after a giant wolf that has been killing their sheep. Red asks if she can go, but Granny refuses to let her and tells her to stay inside with her cloak on—even after they secure their cottage. The following morning, Red goes to check on the chickens, only to come across a sleepy Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Red agrees to help Snow, who, being a fugitive, asks to be called Mary. When they go to the well for water, they notice the water is filled with crimson blood and find a trail of slaughtered bodies left lying on the snowy ground. Later on, during a town hall meeting, Granny tells the citizens of her own encounter with the wolf, which killed her family 60 years earlier and left her with a scarred arm, saying that there is no way anyone can kill the creature. Despite this, Red and a reluctant Snow decide to search for the wolf on their own.
Red, a superior tracker, finds the wolf prints, but they morph into human boot prints as the duo follow them. Worse, they lead to Red's window and the only person she remembers seeing there is Peter. That night, Red meets Peter to tell him he is a werewolf. She has to tie him up on full moon nights, but she will stay with him. Back at Granny's cottage, Granny finds Snow posing as Red in her cloak on her bed. Snow assures Granny they are safe since Red has Peter tied up. Granny is dismayed at this and explains that Red is the wolf and the curse has been passed among the family. Granny herself was a wolf but has lost most of her power due to age, though she can still track Red by scent. They find the tree where Red tied up Peter, but it is too late—she has already transformed and devoured him. Granny strikes Red with a silver-tipped arrow and orders Snow to put the cloak over her as it is magical and keeps the wearer from becoming a wolf. Red returns to her human form, confused at first, then horrified to discover what she has done. The hunting party closes in as Granny tells the girls to make their escape into the woods.
In the Enchanted Forest, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory) run from the queen's men and waste no time fighting and eluding them. As Snow and Red hide in the woods, Red notices a tear in her hood and worries it won't prevent her from turning during the coming full moon. She tells Snow they have to split up so she'll be safe and that they'll meet up in the morning. As Red runs off, a man watches her go and his eyes begin glowing like a wolf as he follows her. The following morning, Red wakes up to take a drink of water from the stream and sees the man take her hood. She succeeds in getting it back after tackling him to the ground. He introduces himself as Quinn (Ben Hollingsworth) and tells Red that he can recognize a child of the moon because, like Red, he is one as well. Quinn also tells her that she can learn how to control the wolf, and leads her to an underground grand hall that is home to werewolves just like them. They are greeted by their leader Anita (Annabeth Gish), who is revealed to be Red's mother. Anita tells Red that Granny (Beverley Elliott) lied and kidnapped Red when she was a baby so she wouldn't find out about her true identity. Anita says she can teach her to accept the wolf as a part of herself and learn to control it, starting with letting go of Red's hood.
During the night, Anita guides Red by telling her about the feeling of running through the woods with her pack, and that she has to give in to the wolf to be in control. As Red wakes up the next morning, she tells Anita that she remembers what happened and that she doesn't have to be afraid any more. However, the location is later compromised when Snow, who claimed that she eluded the queen's men during the night, stumbles onto the place and sees Red and Anita. Moments after Red tells her mother that Snow can be trusted, the queen's men find Snow, and during their attack, they kill Quinn. Anita believes that all humans can never be trusted and decides to have Snow killed and wants Red to kill her. When Red refuses, Anita says she'll do it herself and turns into a wolf, only to have Red kill Anita by knocking her onto a skewer before she can strike at Snow. Snow manages to untie herself and quickly places the red cloak onto Red changing her back into her human form, Red then apologizes to her mother, who says Red chose Snow, but Red explains she chose herself and she is not a killer. Hours later, Red and Snow bury Anita, and Red tells Snow that she didn't lose her family today, she protected it, and that Snow was the only person who ever thought it was okay to control her life as a human and as a wolf.
•CHAPTER TEN•
Estimated time of Maleficent placing a curse on Prince Phillip that turns him into a fierce creature called the Yaoguai and banishing him to a far off land to keep him away from his true love, Aurora.
A group of giant brothers gather for dinner in their castle in the sky to celebrate the once-a-century harvest of magic beans. Anton (Jorge Garcia), the shortest among them, is nicknamed "Tiny" and is mocked for his interest in humans. The leader of the giants, Arlo (Abraham Benrubi), explains that humans used the beans for conquest instead of exploration, so the giants now conceal themselves and the beans. Anton asks why they still grow the beans, as the giants also don't use them, and Arlo says the labor itself is worthwhile. Another brother, Abraham (C. Ernst Harth), then breaks a human harp that interested Anton, and an angry Anton climbs down the beanstalk to the human world.
King George (Alan Dale) interrupts the original Prince James's (Josh Dallas) dalliance with Jacqueline (Cassidy Freeman) to inform him of the presence of a giant in the kingdom, which he hopes to use to their advantage. James and Jacqueline find Anton. Jacqueline introduces herself by her nickname, "Jack," and gives Anton a magic mushroom that will temporarily make him human-sized. They show him hospitality and then allow him to learn that the kingdom is destitute. Anton offers to bring treasure to help his new friends and the kingdom where he now hopes to live, but claims the giants have no magic beans.
Anton later returns to his home to gather treasure. Arlo tries to warn him that the humans won't accept him, but Anton doesn't believe him until James and Jack appear, intent on taking the beans. With poisoned swords, their army is able to effectively fight the giants. Abraham is killed and Arlo orders Anton to burn and salt the fields. Jack stabs Arlo but he also wounds her with the poisoned sword. James flees with a sack of treasure, leaving Jack to die. All the giants but Anton are killed. A dying Arlo gives Anton a beanstalk cutting in the hopes that he will someday find somewhere to plant it.
In The Enchanted Forest, the Ogre Wars continue and Belle (Emilie de Ravin) assures her father, Sir Maurice (Eric Keenleyside), help is on the way. Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) arrives and agrees to aid the battle in exchange for Belle. Her fiance Gaston (Sage Brocklebank) and her father are against the terms but Belle agrees. At his castle, Rumpelstiltskin gives Belle a list of tasks, including skinning the children that he eats. At this Belle drops a teacup in shock. He explains that it's a joke and tells her not to worry about the chipped cup
Meanwhile in the Enchanted Forest, Prince James (Dallas) competes in a battle against a challenger, preparing for his acceptance from King Midas (Alex Zahara) to slay a dragon as part of a deal between him and James' father, King George (Alan Dale). However, after celebrating the deal, James is stabbed to death by the nearly dead challenger. This makes King George worried about his future and his kingdom, until Rumpelstiltskin (Carlyle) shows up to pay him a visit. He tells King George that he wants something in return, which is the wand that the Fairy Godmother carries (with which he will use to kill her). After the King agrees, Rumpelstiltskin tells him that James has a twin brother, as it appears that the king adopted James through Rumpelstiltskin in order to save the kingdom. He then tells the King that he can bring the twin to the castle to have him pose as James but would let the King's guards do the rest.
•CHAPTER ELEVEN•
The story begins in the Enchanted Forest, where, in the story of Cinderella, the titular character is about to receive a wish from her fairy godmother. Before that can happen, the fairy godmother is magically killed by Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) who then takes her wand. He is willing to grant Ella (Jessy Schram) her wish, but in return wants something precious from her, so he conjures up a contract that she signs. Rumpelstiltskin then transforms Ella into an elegant woman complete with glass slippers, warning her that all magic has a price.
At a nearby valley, a young shepherd, James' twin brother, is herding sheep. As his mother (Gabrielle Rose) arrives home from the market, she mentions the prospect of an arranged marriage, but the shepherd is not prepared to marry for the sake of a dowry, even though the farm is in trouble. That's when Rumpelstiltskin comes in. He tells the shepherd the truth about how his parents traded his twin brother for saving their land, then told him that the King wants him to help save his kingdom by standing in for his twin. The shepherd reluctantly accepts, even as he forgives his mother.
In the Enchanted Forest, soon after Belle has gone to live with Rumplestiltstkin, she cries at night and he gives her a pillow – not for comfort, but to stifle her sobs. They are interrupted by the sound of an intruder. Rumple captures a thief (Tom Ellis) who is trying to steal a magic wand, after being unharmed by the thief's magically unerring bow and arrow. Rumple locks him up and plans to torture him to death; he plans to show people not to cross him when they find the thief's skinned body. Belle fails to persuade him to let the thief go, so she releases him herself. He invites her to run away with him, but she stands by her pledge to serve Rumple. Rumple is enraged, and then shows Belle that the thief took the wand when he left. Belle still has faith in the possibility that the thief is a good person, saying that Rumple can't know a person's heart without truly knowing the person. Rumple demands Belle accompany him in hunting down the thief with his own bow.
The two later track the thief to Sherwood Forest, where the Sheriff of Nottingham (Wil Traval) reveals, after Rumple magically takes his tongue when the man asks to have his way with Belle in exchange for information, that the thief is his own nemesis, Robin Hood, who stole his love. When Rumple and Belle finally see Robin Hood from a distance, Rumple magically imprisons Belle in the ground to force her to watch as he kills him. But after Robin Hood uses the wand to heal his pregnant and apparently deathly-ill lover, Marian, Belle begs Rumple not to leave the child fatherless. Remembering that was the fate he left Baelfire with, Rumple "misses" with his arrow and lets the couple escape. Receiving a warm hug from Belle for his change of heart, Rumple later delights her with access to his vast library, flippantly calling it just another room for her to clean.
•CHAPTER TWELVE•
In the Enchanted Forest, Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla) searches for the fugitive Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and finds that Snow has recently left a village. Regina offers the villagers gold for information on Snow, whom she denounces as the murderer of Leopold, but they remain silent. Regina orders all the villagers killed. She meets with Rumplestiltstkin, asking to learn Cora's shape-shifting spell. He tells her it would take too long to teach it, instead offering to cast it on her himself, in exchange for her cutting off trade with King George's kingdom in order to bankrupt him. She agrees and is transformed into an inconspicuous peasant. She will be unable to use her own magic while under the spell, but she plans to get close enough to Snow White to murder her with her own hands, and then cast herself as a hero instead of the "Evil Queen" her subjects call her.
In a marketplace, Regina is unable to contain her anger at seeing the public defacement of an effigy of herself; blamed for the crime and mocked as a madwoman when she proclaims herself the queen, guards take her to be beheaded. Snow White appears and rescues her from the chopping block, taking her to a forest hideout to nurse her injuries. Regina asks why Snow, a known fugitive, would risk her own life to help her, a stranger. Snow explains that a stranger saved her life when she was a little girl on a runaway horse, and that two people can form a true connection through kindness. At Regina's prompting, Snow also speaks of Regina as they move within the forest, saying that if Regina were truly repentant and wanted to be a family, Snow could forgive her for sending the Huntsman after her. But when they come to the massacred village, Snow declares that there is no good in Regina and her crimes are unforgivable. Regina reminds Snow that Regina saved her from the horse, a connection Snow never revealed, leading Snow to recognize Regina. Snow nocks an arrow but does not shoot as Regina flees. Regina comes to the palace of Rumplestiltskin, who has repeatedly ignored her verbal summons. He forces her to acknowledge that neither Snow nor the people will ever accept her, then restores her appearance. She embraces her identity as the "Evil Queen."
After a few months, Belle mentions she found children's clothing and Rumpelstiltskin admits he had a son. The two grow closer. Gaston arrives to rescue Belle but Rumpelstiltskin turns him into a rose and presents it to her as a gift. When asked about Gaston, Belle says that it was an arranged marriage, not one of love. She left him because she wanted to be heroic and there are not many chances for women to be heroic. Rumpelstiltskin asks Belle to go into town to buy more straw, and she can't believe he trusts her to come back. Rumpelstiltskin says he doesn't expect to see her again. As Belle is walking down the road, she runs into The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), who asks her if she is running from someone. Belle admits the man she is leaving is overcome by evil yet she loves him. The Evil Queen offers the solution: true love's kiss will break the curse. Belle returns to Rumpelstiltskin to kiss him and break the curse. Although it begins to work, he becomes furious and shakes off the magic, accusing Belle of conspiring with The Evil Queen. Rumpelstiltskin yells in a rage that no one will love him, and The Evil Queen will never take away his power. He throws Belle in his dungeon and smashes every cup against the wall but he cannot bring himself to destroy the chipped one. Once he has cooled off, he tells Belle to leave because his powers are more important to him than she is. Belle admonishes him for not believing she can love him. She warns him that he will regret his actions when all he has is an empty heart and a chipped cup.
•CHAPTER THIRTEEN•
A year later, Nova is still collecting fairy dust made in the mines of the dwarves, when Dreamy recognizes her. He claims to have seen her in his dreams right before he hatched. Dreamy rescues Nova's fairy dust from some runaway mining equipment and becomes her "hero." Nova mentions that she is going to watch the fireflies hoping Dreamy will get that it is an invitation for him but he doesn't. Even though he is told dwarves don't love (that's why they don't have any female dwarves), he is convinced by Belle (Emilie de Ravin) in a bar that he should meet with Nova. Dreamy really is in love, and Nova falls for him too. Together they make plans to run away and see the world, but this plan is thwarted when the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) shows up. She convinces Dreamy that the best thing for Nova would be if she didn't date Dreamy anymore. In the interest of saving Nova's dream and her wings, Dreamy is forced to leave her. He returns to the mine heartbroken, proclaiming, "Where's my ax?" Welcomed back by the Dwarves, but still angry, he strikes the rock in rage, breaking his ax. He is given a new one which renames him Grumpy.
Belle (Emilie de Ravin) sits in a tavern and takes note of a group of men organizing an expedition to hunt a monster called the Yaoguai that terrorizes a distant kingdom. Dreamy (Lee Arenberg) arrives to thank her for the advice she gave him the previous night; he and Nova plan to run away together. He realizes that Belle yearns for adventure and is interested in the hunt for the Yaoguai. She insists she finds adventure enough in her books, but ultimately goes along with his suggestion that she join the hunters. Dreamy gives her a pouch of fairy dust.
Belle reads a book, written in a foreign language, as the hunting party travels in a wagon and the others--all men--mock her. After she tells them that the book identifies a lake as the Yaoguai's likely location, they abandon her in the road. However, she lied to them; mountains are the Yaoguai's preferred habitat, and she quickly locates its lair. But she is unable to sneak up on the creature's cave, and it emerges; it is a large quadruped with a mane of fire. Arrows are fired and the Yaoguai flees. Belle thanks her savior, who turns out to be a female warrior, Mulan (Jamie Chung), who is angry that Belle has spoiled the two weeks she spent tracking the Yaoguai. Belle explains that she found the creature much more quickly than that and offers to help find it again, but Mulan rejects the offer.
Later, the hunters confront Belle over her lie and they assault her. Mulan appears and easily fights the men off. She tells Belle of how she learned to hold her own against disrespectful men when she served in her emperor's army. She acknowledges that Belle's tracking skills are superior to her own, and they agree to work together in the hunt for the Yaoguai so that Mulan can save her village. The original plan is for Mulan to fight the beast after Belle tracks it, however, Mulan was injured fighting the men and is now too weak. She asks Belle to confront the Yaoguai, encouraging her to find her "warrior spirit."
Belle is able to lure the Yaoguai into the village, where she uses a water tower to douse it. After the Yaoguai collapses to the ground, it uses its claw to write a message, "Save me." Belle throws the fairy dust onto the Yaoguai, and it turns into Prince Phillip (Julian Morris). He explains that Maleficent cursed him by exiling him far from his kingdom in a monstrous form in order to keep him apart from his true love, Aurora. In thanks for saving him, Belle asks only that he help Mulan get the medical attention she needs. She takes Phillip to the woods and introduces him to Mulan, explaining what has happened. Belle then departs, planning to return to Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). She is taken prisoner by Regina, the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), her location having been betrayed by the men from the hunt. The Queen claims she is sparing Belle from the misery of trying and failing to reform Rumplestiltskin, but Belle defiantly shouts that she will never stop fighting for him.
A month later, The Evil Queen shows up and wants to ask him for a deal, this one involving a mermaid. Rumpelstiltskin says that her deception with Belle failed, and that The Evil Queen will never be more powerful than him. She then tells him that she had nothing to do with Belle's actions (even though she prodded her, Belle's feelings were real) and informs him that upon Belle's return to her home, she had been shunned by her village for her association with Rumpelstiltskin and Gaston's disappearance and was subsequently imprisoned and tortured by her father. She eventually killed herself, leaping off the tower she was kept prisoner in. Rumpelstiltskin is devastated and replaces a treasured gold chalice with the chipped cup.
•CHAPTER FOURTEEN•
As the shepherd prepared for his battle, the King's guards tell him that they will take care of the dragon and that the shepherd will just stay in the background. Unfortunately, as they reach the dragon's den, the dragon kills the leading guards, prompting the shepherd to jump into action. Seizing the golden sword, the shepherd draws the dragon to a tight spot, where he succeeds in killing the dragon. After returning the dragon's head to King Midas, King George and the shepherd, who now takes his late brother James' name, receives a more surprising offer that will unite the two kingdoms, his daughter Abigail's (Griffith) hand in marriage. But just as the shepherd is about to turn down the offer, King George pulls him aside and whispers in his ear that he is to accept the deal or he will kill him and his mother and take away their land. The shepherd has no choice but to go along with the deal.
As the shepherd returns to his home, he tells his mother that he will not be staying and he can never see her again. However, she gives him a ring that she hopes will be worn by the one that he'll fall in love with. The shepherd returns to the kingdom to thank King George and King Midas, then takes his new bride-to-be Abigail to their destined location, where along the way they're about to encounter a road block that was put in place by a hooded vagabond named Snow White (Goodwin).
The story begins in the Enchanted Forest, where a guarded carriage carrying Prince Charming (Joshua Dallas) and his fiancee, Abigail (Anastasia Griffith), is halted by a roadblock. When Charming checks out the tree that was blocking the road, he notices it was cut on purpose. The carriage is ambushed by a hooded vagabond, who takes the bag carrying the valuables, including a wedding ring. Charming chases the mysterious vagabond and knocks them off the horse. He discovers it is a woman, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Before he can get an answer as to why she stole the valuables, Snow hits him with a rock, surprising and cutting him to make her escape. Charming promises that he will find her.
Charming tracks Snow and nets her in a trap as she steps out of her hideout with the stolen goods. Snow reluctantly agrees to show Charming where she sold his jewels. Along the way, Charming discovers a wanted poster of Snow in her bag. Snow claims The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) blames her for ruining her life. Charming asks if this is true and she admits it is. As they reach a river, Snow once again tricks Charming and escapes again, only to be captured moments later, this time by The Queen's henchmen. Their orders are to cut out Snow's heart and bring it to The Queen. When Charming sees this, he attacks the henchmen with his sword, killing two. One henchman gets away with Snow, and Charming quickly dispatches him with an arrow. Now that he has saved Snow, she decides to trust him, and agrees to lead him to the place where she sold the items.
As they reach a bridge that was damaged, Snow tells Charming that this was the place where she sold the items to a group of trolls. When she asks the trolls if she can buy back the ring, the trolls become suspicious and discover the wanted poster of Snow, leading to a battle. Snow comes to Charming's rescue by using fairy dust to turn the trolls into bugs. Charming is surprised that Snow saved him, but she wants to repay him for saving her life before with the henchmen. As she hands him back the items, including the wedding ring, Snow looks at the ring, then places it on her finger before handing it back to him as they go their separate ways.
•CHAPTER FIFTEEN•
In the Enchanted Forest, Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory) brings supplies and news to her friend, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) is set to marry Abigail (Anastasia Griffith) in two days. Snow White wishes there were a way to get Charming out of her head as she is still in love with him. Red suggests she see Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Snow takes her advice. Rumpelstiltskin takes some water and a piece of Snow's hair to make a potion that will make her forget Charming. He warns that love is a powerful disease and the cure must be extreme.
In the Enchanted Forest, Hansel (Lord) and Gretel (Collins), are searching for kindling while their father (Lea) chops firewood. He gives Gretel a compass so they won't be separated, but when they return, he is nowhere to be found. As they search they run into The Evil Queen (Parrilla) and are captured. She tells the two that she can help find their father, on the condition that they retrieve an item belonging to her from The Blind Witch (Emma Caulfield). They must enter her gingerbread house when The Blind Witch is asleep and fetch The Evil Queen's leather satchel, but they must not eat a thing. They break in safely, but Hansel gives in to the temptation of taking a bite of a cupcake, causing The Blind Witch to wake up. While she cannot see the children, she can smell their scent. The Blind Witch locks them up and prepares the oven to roast them. The two, working together, are able to push the witch into her own oven as The Evil Queen gleefully watches from her mirror.
When the two return to The Evil Queen's palace, she opens the satchel to reveal a poisoned apple. The Evil Queen offers Hansel and Gretel a home at the palace, but they are adamant about returning to their father. She sends them back into the forest and summons her newest prisoner, Hansel and Gretel's father. The Evil Queen asks why the children turned down the luxurious life of the palace and he answers that they are family, and family finds each other. Frustrated, she sends him away to see if they indeed find each other.
At the palace, Charming struggles with his feelings for Snow. The King (Alan Dale) commands him to forget her because the marriage to Abigail is worth great wealth to the kingdom. Charming sends a letter by carrier pigeon to Snow begging her to come and see him so they can be together. The letter reaches her just before she can take the potion. Snow makes it to the palace but she is seized by the guards and thrown into the dungeon. There she meets a dwarf named Grumpy (Lee Arenberg), who was falsely imprisoned for stealing a diamond that he wanted to give to his girlfriend. Another dwarf, Stealthy (Geoff Gustafson), shows up to rescue Grumpy, who asks Stealthy to free Snow as well. The guards kill Stealthy as they try to escape and try to recapture Grumpy. Snow threatens to burn down the palace unless they let Grumpy go and take her in his place. The King tells Snow he will not let her interfere with the wedding. She must tell Charming she does not love him, or the King will kill him. Snow obeys because she loves Charming too much to let him die, but both are left heartbroken. Snow leaves and is soon joined by Grumpy and six other dwarfs, who offer her a place to stay. She considers the potion but Grumpy warns her that those feelings however painful, are part of her.
•CHAPTER SIXTEEN•
In the Enchanted Forest, King George's (Alan Dale) men hunt for Prince James (Josh Dallas) who has fled his wedding to Abigail (Anastasia Griffith). James narrowly escapes, with Abigail's help. When he asks why she would do this, Abigail tells James she does not want this arranged marriage any more than he does. She takes him to a monument containing a life-sized, golden statue of Frederick, the man she loves. During an ambush, he had tried to protect her father, Midas, but had accidentally touched him and been transformed to gold by Midas' curse.
Abigail explains that there is a lake with waters reported to have the right magic to restore Frederick, but no man has come back from that lake alive. James agrees to risk it because if he succeeds, Abigail's suffering will end, but if he fails, his own suffering will end. Abigail takes James to the lake and shows him a shrine where others have left offerings to appease the creature within. She offers to accompany him, but James tells her he will go on alone since he does not want any life in his hands but his own. He commands the beast to show itself and is answered by a beautiful siren. Even though James knows the deceptive nature of the siren, she transforms into the image of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and attempts to seduce him. It takes all his will to refuse the temptress so she tries to drown him by force. James manages to cut himself free and stab the siren to death. He returns to Abigail victorious and the water restores Frederick to life. The reunited lovers are overjoyed and grateful. James is inspired to carry on his quest to find his love, Snow White. He meets Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory), who informs him that Snow White left to look for him and tell him she loves him. James realizes King George forced Snow White to lie when she said otherwise. The King's men close in on James so he pulls Red Riding Hood up on his horse and the two escape.
Charming calls off the wedding to look for Snow and the dwarves hear about it from Red Riding Hood. Grumpy joyfully tells Snow the good news, but she has forgotten about Charming. The pain was too great to
bear and she had drunk the potion
In the Enchanted Forest, King George's men catch up with Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) and Red (Meghan Ory). To cover the prince's escape, Red throws off her cloak under the full moon, which lets her transform into the wolf. Back in the cottage, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) is humming "With a Smile and a Song," seemingly content, until she spots a bluebird, which she swats violently. Grumpy (Lee Arenberg) enters to ask her to come to dinner, but it turns out that the dwarves have arranged an intervention with the help of Jiminy Cricket (Raphael Sbarge). They explain to Snow that she has not been herself since she drank the potion and they ask her to stop taking her anger out on her friends. Snow voices that the cause of her ire is the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), and decides to take revenge on her instead. Later that night, Snow attacks one of the Queen's knights and demands information about her whereabouts. Snow learns that the Queen will soon be en route to her summer palace. As she knocks the knight unconscious and takes his clothes as a disguise, Grumpy arrives to help her. He wants to take Snow to Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) so he can reverse the potion. Later on, Charming finds the knight wandering in the woods. He tells Charming about Snow almost killing him, which he doesn't believe, but he takes his word on finding her with Rumpelstiltskin, and heads in that direction.
At Rumpelstiltskin's palace, Grumpy talks to him about Snow's situation, but Rumpelstiltskin tells him that “no potion can bring back true love” as Snow has no feeling for love, and adds that he has never been able to bottle it. Snow tells Rumpelstiltskin that she does not desire to have her love back anyway, but instead wants his help in killing the Queen, so he gives her a bow and arrow, telling her, “It always finds its target!” An upset Grumpy leaves Snow, stating he wants nothing to do with her plans. Rumpelstiltskin then tells Snow that he does not want anything in return, stating that he is “invested in her future.” After Snow has left, Charming arrives searching for her and asks Rumpelstiltskin to undo the potion. Rumpelstiltskin reminds him that true love's kiss can break any spell. Charming gives up his cloak to Rumpelstiltskin in exchange for a map telling him exactly where Snow will be and then Rumpelstiltskin warns Charming that he must hurry because “if she kills the Queen, she becomes as evil as the woman whose life she takes.” Hours later in the woods, Snow is testing the bow's strength, when Charming ambushes her from behind, kissing her passionately. However, Snow still does not remember who he is, and knocks him unconscious and ties him to a tree. When he awakens, he begs Snow not to carry out her plan, but she ignores the pleas and walks away. Moments later Jiminy arrives and bites through the ropes, setting Charming free, then mentions that Snow is not going to remember who Charming is until she remembers who she is herself. Snow prepares to strike the Queen riding out in the open but Charming dives into the arrow's path taking it in the shoulder. Charming reminds Snow that he would die for her, which Snow is touched by. He then kisses her again and she begins to remember, but their reunion is short-lived as King George’s army finds Charming and Snow, as Snow is shoved away while Charming is put into a moving prison. Snow swears she will find him and as she returns to the Dwarfs' cottage to apologize for her actions towards them, the dwarves forgive her and agree to help with their plans to rescue Charming.
Meanwhile, Rumpelstiltskin takes a hair from Charming's cloak and pairs it with Snow's hair, then bottles it successfully, labeling it "True Love."
•CHAPTER SEVENTEEN•
In the Enchanted Forest, in the hours after having captured Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) for betraying him after he refused to marry Abigail, King George (Alan Dale) decides that Charming will be beheaded. But as the blade prepares to fall on him, The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) turns the blade to water and then makes a deal with King George by trading Charming for all the riches he would have been paid if he had married Midas’ daughter. The Evil Queen tells King George that he will be used to take down his one true love, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Meanwhile, Snow White watches from a hill with the dwarves and Granny (Beverley Elliott). Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory) appears and tells the group that The Queen is there, but despite the fact that her presence there might indicate that it may be a trap, the group decides to move in after King George anyway. Moments later, the Queen goes to see Charming in his cell where he tries to convince her to take his life instead of Snow White's, but she doesn't want his life. When Charming asks what her plan is, she laughs and closes the jail cell and walks away while holding a red apple up for him to see.
Hours later, Snow White, with help from the fairies from above, storms King George's castle, but when she arrives at Charming's cell, she is disappointed to find a mirror there. They speak quickly, but before anything more is said, the Evil Queen interrupts and requests a parlay with no weapons. The entire group warns her not to go, but Snow White is determined to settle her dispute with the Queen without implicating the others. At the stable where Cora murdered her true love, Daniel, the Queen waits for Snow White, who walks up behind her. The Queen leads Snow White to the place where she ran down her runaway horse and saved her life and reveals to Snow White the burial site of Daniel. The Queen explains that she believes Daniel died because of Snow White breaking her promise, and cannot forgive Snow White despite already robbing Snow of her father. The Queen then gives Snow White an apple and makes a deal with her that if she eats the apple, she will be entombed in her own body, filled with nothing but regret, but Charming will live. However, if Snow White doesn't eat the apple, then Charming will die. Unfortunately, as Snow White eats the apple and collapses, Charming feels her soul in his cell now that she took the deal. As Snow White falls to the ground, the poisoned apple rolls down the hill and gets sucked into a portal leading to Jefferson’s (Sebastian Stan) hand waiting in Storybrooke. As Red Riding Hood uses Snow White’s scent to get to the barn, they notice she has no breath. Back at her palace, the Queen chuckles in her tower, saying that Snow's sacrifice is overrated.
In the Enchanted Forest, as Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) attempts to escape from the Evil Queen's (Lana Parrilla) palace, he finds himself outnumbered by her guards. Just as it seems he will be recaptured, the Huntsman (Jamie Dornan) comes to his aid and kills the guards with his arrows, allowing Charming to escape and continue on his quest to find Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). En route, Charming is transported to an infinite forest, thanks to the Queen and her mirror. Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) appears and offers to help him but Charming refuses. They fight with swords; Rumpelstiltskin toys with him and soon disarms him. Charming notices his mother's wedding ring is missing. Rumpelstiltskin holds it up and he offers Charming a deal: he will give the prince back his mother's wedding ring, now enchanted to lead him straight to Snow White, if Charming will put a golden egg containing a potion of true love inside "the belly of the beast."
On his search for the beast, Prince Charming enters a castle and finds Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten), seated on a throne. She turns into a dragon – the beast – to attack Charming. He throws the egg into Maleficent's gills and, after he escapes, Rumpelstiltskin returns the ring and magically dresses him in a new set of clothes with which to make his grand return to his true love. As seen in the series premiere, Charming races to Snow White's glass coffin, opens it and kisses her, waking her up. He proposes and she accepts. Together, they begin planning to take back the kingdom from the Evil Queen and Charming's sinister adoptive father, King George.
•CHAPTER EIGHTEEN•
After Snow White is woken up by Prince Charming and vowing to take back the kingdom, The Evil Queen is tipped off by the magic mirror as to where Snow White is, and appears in the village to interrupt their plans to overthrow her. She then offers a ultimatum, that Snow renounces the kingdom to her or she will kill the people she is close to her, and makes her point by choking a villager but doesn't kill her as she gave Snow a preview. Against the wishes of Charming, Snow already has a answer, leading the Prince to make a deal with Rumplestiltskin, who tells him of a legend that can be found in the Camelot realm. As they reach the destination, the two discover a sword in the stone. After Charming failed in his attempt to pull it, he convinces Snow to do it and she suceeds. When they return to the village, they're ready for Regina, as Snow tells her that she may be a queen, but she will not let her rule her people. Regina then tries to kill Grumpy by choking him, but Snow suceeds in saving him and uses the sword to strike Regina's face. As Regina sees the scar, she warns Snow that she will meet her on the battlefield.
Hours later, Snow calls out Rumplestilskin to ask him about the Excalibur sword, which she suspected actually came from Camelot, and is willing to make a deal. As Rumplestiltskin appears, he tells her the sword is a fake and it was Charming's idea to lead her to the stone. He then takes her mother's necklace as payment. Snow then returns to the campout to talk to Charming, who told her that the sword was to make her believe that she can stand up to Regina and it was all her doing without any magic. The two kiss and made up.
At a campsite, Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory), Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), and their allies are attacked by King George's (Alan Dale) knights. One of the assailants turns out to be Sir Lancelot (Sinqua Walls), who captures Snow and brings her back to face King George. At the palace, the King tells Snow that Charming failed him because he wanted him to be the son that he always longed to have and now wants Charming to feel his pain. The King had offered Snow water to drink upon her arrival, and after she has drunk it, he reveals to her it that was actually a potion to prevent her from ever having children. Moments later, and after being dropped out of a carriage, Snow hears someone on horseback, so she takes a stick and knocks him to the ground, revealing the person to be Lancelot. However, it turns out that Lancelot wants to help Snow reach Charming and his mother Ruth (Gabrielle Rose) before King George's men get to them. By the time they reach the farm, Snow and Lancelot discover that they are too late, as Charming has already fended off the King's men, but Ruth has been shot by a poisoned arrow. After she is hit, she gives Snow a medallion she got from a gypsy that will predict the gender of Snow's unborn baby, but it doesn't work because of the effects of the King's potion. Snow eventually reveals to Ruth what has happened, and Ruth then tells her the water of Lake Nostros is a chance to break the curse for both women.
As the group arrives at Lake Nostros, they discover that the lake is now dry. Charming realizes that killing the Siren to free Frederick resulted in the disappearance of the water. However, Lancelot believes that there has to be some water left in the area, and he finds enough in a snail shell for one person. Ruth secretly suggests to Snow that she take it instead of her, but Snow reluctantly turns down the offer. When Ruth drinks the water, however, she was not healed. Knowing it is too late to look for another way to save her, Ruth regrets not being able to see Snow and Charming's wedding. This gives Snow an idea to perform a small wedding ceremony just for Ruth. Snow asks Lancelot to perform the ceremony, and Snow and Charming are married before Ruth passes away. Charming then gives Snow the medallion, which all of a sudden starts moving over her hand. Snow realizes that Ruth only pretended to drink the water and had Lancelot put it in the chalice at their wedding in order to get Snow to drink it, thus breaking the curse of the potion. She tells Lancelot the medallion has predicted that their child will be a girl. Charming vows that they will take the kingdom, this time as a family.
•CHAPTER NINETEEN•
The Evil Queen/Regina (Lana Parrilla) surveys a scene of destruction and learns that King George and his army have been defeated by the forces of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), and that Snow is now traveling to reunite with Charming. The Evil Queen orders her soldiers to keep them apart long enough for her to find Snow. Later, she confronts Snow in the forest, and rejects Snow’s offer of parley, instead demanding Snow’s death. It turns out to be a trap (though the offer of parley was genuine and Snow was prepared to accept the Queen's surrender); the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) launches an attack on the Queen and magically binds her.
Prince Charming declares that the only way to deal with the Evil Queen is to put her to death. Snow White recalls that the Queen was once kind and saved her life, but accedes to Charming’s insistence that this is the only way to protect the kingdom. The Queen’s father, Henry (Tony Perez), visits her in her cell, and blames himself for failing her as a father. He begs her to show remorse in hopes of saving her own life. When she is brought to the site of her execution where a concealed Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) is looking on from the crowd, she expresses regret only for failing to cause more destruction and especially for failing to kill Snow White. Even so, Snow halts the execution at the last moment. She tells Charming that the Queen was only trying to not appear weak as she died and insists that she can be rehabilitated. Rumplestiltskin later reveals himself to Snow and offers his services in testing the Queen to determine if she can truly change.
Snow White comes to the Evil Queen’s cell and tells her she wants them to start fresh. She releases the Queen from the cell and encourages her to leave evil behind when she departs, however, the Queen attacks Snow instead. When Snow tries to defend herself with a dagger, the Queen takes it and stabs Snow. To they Queen's dismay, Snow remains unharmed. Charming emerges and reveals that one of her hairs, taken from the blindfold that was put on her at the execution, was used by Rumplestiltskin to create a protection spell that prevents her from harming Snow or Charming in this land. Snow points out that this was not a trap, but a test she truly hoped the Queen would pass. The Queen is banished forever to live alone with her misery.
On Snow White and Prince Charming’s wedding day, Rumplestiltskin comes to the Evil Queen and tells her that the protection spell would lose its effect if they traveled to a different land. The Queen calls for a carriage to take her to the wedding. The plan to send everyone to Storybrooke begins.
On the wedding day of Snow White and Prince Charming, the Evil Queen arrives and delivers an ominous threat about a powerful curse she intends to release upon them
•CHAPTER TWENTY•
This is the estimated time in which Aurora begins her slumber since she is asleep when the curse is cast. It is estimated she slept for less than a year at that time. It likely occurred when Prince Charming and Snow White were married, depending on how much time passed betwixt their wedding and the curse's casting.
She goes to see Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten), to whom she had traded a Dark Curse. Maleficent refuses to return the curse, but the Queen defeats her in a magical battle, taking the scroll. She lets Maleficent live, stating that Maleficent is the only friend she has.
Several months later at a gala wedding ball for Ella and her new husband, Prince Thomas (Tim Phillipps), Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Joshua Dallas) congratulate the couple on their wedding, as does Rumpelstiltskin who tells Ella that he does not care for her riches or baubles, but instead shall claim her firstborn.
In the Enchanted Forest, Jefferson (Stan) is frantically running through the woods and ducks behind a tree. However, he is found a moment later by his daughter, Grace; they are playing hide-and-seek. They happily go off to find mushrooms to sell at the market. But when they return home, they see that the carriage of the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) is waiting outside. Jefferson tells the frightened Grace to hide in the woods until the Queen is gone. He enters the house to find the Queen. She wants one last favor from Jefferson, offering Grace luxury for the rest of her life as a reward after Jefferson's accomplishing a deed. He refuses, stating that his job cost Grace her mother and he will not allow her to lose her father as well. He finally tells the Queen that there is nothing more important than family. The Queen agrees, and leaves.
At the market the next day, Grace sets her heart on a stuffed white rabbit as it will be perfect for her tea parties. Jefferson is unable to afford the price of one silver, but tries to convince the elderly merchant to accept his eight coppers. The merchant refuses. Grace assures Jefferson that she does not need it and they leave. The merchant goes to the back of her cart, where the Magic Mirror (Giancarlo Esposito) states that she is truly cruel. The merchant is revealed to be the Evil Queen. Back at home, Jefferson has sewn a rabbit for Grace. She is delighted and adds it to her tea party guests. Jefferson is clearly troubled. He asks Grace to spend the rest of the day with the neighbors as he has work to do. She wants to go with him as she likes to work with him in the forest, but he tells her he is not going to the forest. She realizes that his work is related to the Queen's visit and she begs him to change his mind. He says that he wants her to have everything she needs. She replies that she only needs him and asks him to stay. He refuses, but promises to be home in time for the next tea party. After Grace is gone, Jefferson takes a large hat box out of his trunk.
Jefferson brings his box to the Queen and has her promise that his daughter will want for nothing after he retrieves what she has lost. After she agrees, he takes a top hat out of the hat box and sets it on the floor. He spins it and the hat continues spinning until it grows into an enormous spinning portal. The Queen and Jefferson jump into it and land in a room full of different doors. He leads the Queen to a mirror. Before they step through, he explains that the hat has a rule: the number of people who go into a door must be the same number as those who come out. The two of them go through the mirror. They step into a land with very tall grass and giant mushrooms. They pass an enormous blue caterpillar smoking a hookah. It asks who they are and blows smoke rings into their faces. Jefferson coughs and mutters that he hates Wonderland. The pair come upon the Queen of Hearts's hedge maze where the Evil Queen wishes to go to the building in the center. Jefferson refuses out of fear of the Queen of Hearts, but the Evil Queen reminds him that he cannot leave without her. He cautions that the hedges eat whatever comes too close, but she burns a straight path to the building with magic. The Evil Queen takes a small box from the building, causing guards to appear. They are able to narrowly escape.
She and Jefferson hurry back to the mirror, but the Evil Queen stops to take a piece of the mushroom. She places the piece into the box, and her father Henry (Tony Perez) appears out of the box. Jefferson is horrified. He realizes that the Queen knew about the hat's rule and did not tell him that her father was abducted by the Queen of Hearts for leverage on purpose. Because there are now three people, one of them cannot leave Wonderland. Jefferson's feet become stuck to the path, and he begs the Evil Queen to let him go back to his daughter. She tells him that if he cared for Grace, he would have never left her. The Evil Queen and Henry walk through the mirror and leave Jefferson behind staring at the mirror in a daze as guards drag him away.
Jefferson is presented to the Queen of Hearts (Jennifer Koenig). She knows that he helped the Evil Queen and has her aide the Knave of Hearts (Paul McGillion) ask how they got into Wonderland. He says that he will tell her only after he is allowed to go home to his daughter. The Queen of Hearts orders him beheaded, and he is decapitated, though to his horrified surprise he remains alive. He is told that if he wants his head reattached, he must answer the question. He tells the Queen of Hearts about his hat. When asked about the hat's whereabouts, he says that the Evil Queen took it. The Queen of Hearts tells him that if he only requires the magical hat to return home, he only has to make another. However, he replies that he cannot: a hat without magic is just a hat and will not work. The Queen of Hearts tells him that his task is to get a hat to work. Afterwards, he is seen in a large room filled with hats, making another hat and frantically muttering to himself to get it to work.
•CHAPTER TWENTY ONE•
In the Enchanted Forest, as Pinocchio (Jakob Davies) and Geppetto (Tony Amendola) fight the storm on the raft in the ocean, the whale that had swallowed them, Monstro, passes them and tilts their raft. In an effort to save each other, Geppetto tells him to take the life jacket, but Pinocchio refuses, jumps into the water, and tells Geppetto to save himself. The following morning, Geppetto washes up on shore and discovers that Pinocchio saved him as the lifeless puppet boy lies face-down in the water. As Geppetto weeps at the loss of his son, the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) appears, saying he can still save him and uses her wand to turn him into a real boy. As the Blue Fairy wishes them well and to live their lives as a family, she tells Pinocchio to remain brave, truthful and unselfish - so long as he does that, he will always remain a real boy.
Ella later tells Thomas that they are expecting a baby, but also tells him about how she was tricked into making a deal with Rumpelstiltskin in which she had to give up the child to him. Thomas, upon hearing this, decides that he is not going to let Rumpelstiltskin take away what is rightfully theirs, so with the help of Charming, Grumpy, and The Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy), they come up with a plot to capture Rumpelstiltskin by luring him into signing another contract. They say that his greatest strength, making deals, is also his weakness. Hours later, at a neutral location, Ella and Rumpelstiltskin meet to sign the deal. Ella then lies to him and says she is expecting twins and will give him both of the babies in exchange for improving the crops and wealth of the kingdom. A skeptical Rumpelstiltskin agrees, but as he signs the contract, he is rendered powerless thanks to a special red quill pen, that was created by The Blue Fairy. He is captured by Charming and Thomas. Ella then goes into false labor, prompting Thomas to run to a well to fetch her some water. When Ella's contractions stop, she looks for Thomas who has suddenly disappeared. She demands that Rumpelstiltskin tell her what has happened, but he claims not to have done anything. He reminds her that all magic has a price, and that until his debt is paid she will never see Thomas again
At the Evil Queen's (Lana Parrilla) fortress, Captain Hook/Killian Jones (Colin O'Donoghue) kills a guard in order to reach Belle (Emilie de Ravin), who is imprisoned there. Upon learning that she has no information that can help him kill Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), he prepares to kill her, but is disarmed of his hook by the Evil Queen/Regina who asks for his help in casting the Dark Curse. He agrees after she explains that the Dark One will be rendered an easily killed mortal man by the curse. His assignment is to travel to Wonderland via Jefferson's hat and kill her mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey), whom Regina previously banished to that land. She enchants his hook so that it can be used to remove Cora's heart, and no more than one heart. He is sent with the corpse of the guard he killed, so that he can bring Cora's body back in accordance with the hat's "one goes in, one comes back" rule.
In Wonderland, Hook is brought before the Queen of Hearts, who reveals herself to be Cora. Hook attacks her with the enchanted hook, but fails to remove her heart as she does not keep it in her chest. She takes hold of his heart and forces him to divulge everything. After he tells her everything, she does not take control of him, as she knows Regina would detect it. Instead, she convinces him to side with her by explaining that Regina's curse would strip him of his identity, rendering him unable to exact his revenge, while Cora offers a guarantee of that revenge. Hook agrees to get Cora close enough to Regina to rip her heart out.
Hook brings Cora, who is feigning death, to Regina, and leaves them alone. Regina then confesses to her mother's "body" that she still loves her, but needed her dead because of Cora's own advice that "love is weakness," and Regina cannot allow herself to have a weakness if her plans are to succeed. Regina leaves and Hook returns to ask why Cora didn't kill her. She explains that matters have changed and takes him to another part of the Enchanted Forest to erect a magical barrier.
•CHAPTER TWENTY TWO•
Later in the forest, the Queen assembles a number of dark creatures. She demands a lock of hair from each of the assembly in order to cast the curse, and sacrifices the heart of her prized stallion to complete the spell. The curse, however, fails.
Some time later, a pregnant Snow White is worried about the curse and visits Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), who issues a prophecy that the Queen's curse will take them all someplace terrible where there will be no happy endings. He also reveals that Snow White's unborn daughter, Emma (Jennifer Morrison), will return when she is 28 years old to rescue them, thus beginning a crucial battle with the Queen.
To find out why the curse failed, the Queen turns to Rumpelstiltskin (Carlyle), who had originally given her the curse. Rumpelstiltskin offers to help the Queen if, in turn, she makes him a wealthy and respected person in the new world and promises that in the new world she will do anything he asks so long as he says "please." The Queen agrees, reminding him that in the new world, they would have no recollection of their agreement. Rumpelstiltskin then tells the Queen that she must cut out the heart of the thing she loves the most and use it to complete the spell. The Queen protests that what she loved most died because of Snow White, but Rumpelstiltskin suggests that there is something else the Queen also loves. He also tells the Queen that he has told Snow White and Prince Charming that their unborn daughter will be able to break the Queen's curse.
Days later, the Blue Fairy returns to tell Geppetto about the Evil Queen's (Lana Parrilla) curse as he is the only one who can help. She then takes Geppetto to the last enchanted tree in the realm, which if made into a wardrobe will protect the savior (referring to Emma) from the curse. However, when the Blue Fairy tells him the wardrobe will be built for only two people, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) still pregnant with her newborn daughter and Prince Charming, Geppetto refuses and tells her that he will only create the wardrobe if Pinocchio can go through, too. Jiminy (Raphael Sbarge) disagrees and argues, telling him that he cannot bargain with her, but Geppetto eventually wins the argument after reminding Jiminy that he has no right to tell him what to do after what Jiminy did that caused Geppetto's parents to be turned into dolls, when Geppetto was just a young boy. During the first meeting of the War Council, whose members include Snow White, Prince Charming, Red, Granny, and some others, the Blue Fairy lies to the council that there will be room for only one in the wardrobe as Geppetto looks down at Pinocchio with a caring look.
On returning to her castle, the Queen is distraught over what Rumpelstiltskin told her. She confides in her valet (Tony Perez), who is revealed to be her father. Knowing he is the thing the Queen loves the most, her father tries to dissuade her from her plan, saying that she could still find love again. Appearing to be persuaded, the Queen pulls her father in for an embrace, then stabs him. Alone in the forest, the Queen uses her father's heart to complete the Dark Curse. As the curse takes shape, she lays a black rose on her father's grave. The headstone bears the inscription "Henry, Beloved Father."
Cora prgiects the bariar over her and hook and a big part of the enchanted forest.
After Snow gives birth to Emma early, the Blue Fairy tells Geppetto that Pinocchio cannot go since Snow White should accompany her daughter. When Geppetto asks what will happen to Pinocchio, she tells him that there is no time for that. Before the Blue Fairy can tell Snow White she must leave as well, Geppetto prepares his son to go through anyway, telling him that sometimes people must lie to protect the ones they love. So Pinocchio goes into the wardrobe as Jiminy tells him that he will not fail as long as he remains brave, truthful and unselfish, while Geppetto tells him that he must rescue them and remind Emma to believe in her destiny when she turns 28, and looks to a tearful Pinocchio with pride, saying that he will be a great man. Prince Charming places their daughter in the magic wardrobe, but is mortally wounded battling the Queen's henchmen. Geppetto then locks Pinocchio in the wardrobe, which shook violently. As he opens the wardrobe again, Pinocchio is gone. Pinocchio disappears into the present and emerges from a tree. He is frightened of an airplane that flies by, as he does not know what it is. Pinocchio tries to return through the hole of the tree where he had emerged, but a sudden force blew from the tree and knocked him to the ground. The Queen stands triumphantly over Snow White and Prince Charming as the curse takes them "somewhere horrible." As he regains consciousness, the young boy suddenly sees a crying baby, Emma, inside the trunk of the tree he just came from and tries to calm her down. In a foster home in Boston, Pinocchio looks over baby Emma, trying to quiet her as she cries and he uses funny faces to successfully calm her down, but then is scolded by the man of the house for using the tools to reinforce Emma's crib. When one of the kids comes by with a wad of cash stolen from the sock drawer, he tells the other foster children that it is enough to buy bus tickets for everyone. But despite pleas from Pinocchio, Emma won't be able to come with them as the children won't be able to take care of a baby. As the child leaves, Pinocchio stops him, then apologizes to Emma and blows her a farewell kiss. He goes with the kids, leaving baby Emma behind.
All cursed Enchanted Forest inhabitants land in a land that exists without magic, and are given new personas in the created town of Storybrooke, Maine, with a complete memory wipe of their previous lives.("Pilot")
