There is a lot of clinical evidence to support the working memory model. One example of this is by Shallice and Warrington (1970) who used KF, a patient with brain damage, to prove that short rm memory has different areas. KF had poor short term memory ability for verbal information but could process visual information. He had difficulty with sounds but could recall letters and digits if presented visually. This suggests that KF had damage to his phonological loop only and that other parts of his short term memory were still intact. This clearly supports the claim, that the working memory model presents, that short term memory is not unitary and that visual and acoustic components are stored separately. This idea that short term memory has different parts is also evident through the study of LH who performed better in spatial tasks rather than visual (Farah et al 1988). This proves that there are two areas in the visuo-spatial sketchpad.
