Notes - notes.io

cell cycle:
g1 phase - cell grows
S phase - DNA replication
g2 phase - preparation for mitosis
M phase - mitosis and cytokinesis

Stages of Mitosis:
prophase - mitosis begins, centrioles appear and move to opposite ends of the cell, spindle begins to form
metaphase - sister chromatids attach to the spindle fibers and line up along the equatorial plane of the cell
anaphase - chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
telophase - nuclei begin to form, cell membrane starts to pinch in
cytokinesis - cell membrane pinches in to form two new daughter cells genetically identical to the parent cell

Sister chromatids are two genetically identical chromosomes that are laced together at the centromere

Mitosis:
the purpose is to produce genetically identical daughters cells for growth, repair, and replacement
two daughter cells are produced
daughter cells are diploid
daughter cells are genetically identical

Meiosis:
the purpose is to produce gametes for reproductive purposes
four new daughter cells are produced
daughter cells are haploid
daughter cells are genetically different

sexual reproduction produces more genetic variation than asexual reproduction because it introduces genetic traits from two individuals, while asexual reproduction only involves the genes of one individual

the diploid number of chromosomes for humans is 46, the haploid number is 23

gametes are haploid reproductive cells that are produced during meiosis

each gamete is genetically unique because:
during prophase 1, genes between chromosomes are crossed over
during meiosis, the number of chromosomes is reduced by half

during prophase 1, synapsis and crossing over occurs

a chromosome contains all the genes

the law of segregation states that traits are categorized into distinct units (alleles) and that the individual carries two factors inherited from each parent

the law of independent assortment states that alleles will sort out independently when gametes are formed
