Æsir dan Vanir merupakan golongan yang sangat dekat, karena golongan para Dewa.
Vanir adalah salah satu kelompok Dewa-Dewi dalam mitologi Nordik. Mereka memiliki hubungan dengan Æsir, meskipun mereka dikelompokkan berbeda. Kaum Æsir cenderung sebagai penguasa peraturan, ahli perang, dan lebih berkuasa, dibandingkan Vanir, kaum Dewa-Dewi yang mengatur kesuburan dan fenomena alam.
Sedangkan Jotun adalah raksasa. Nama lain dari Jotun adalah Eontenas atay Entas. Jotun merupakan musuh dari Æsir dan Vanir. Jotun mirip Titan dan Gigantes dalam mitologi Yunani. Meskipun dikatakan raksasa, mereka lebih mirip disebut Troll atau Setan. Jotun wanita biasanya tidak jahat.
Æsir pernah berselisih dengan Jotun. Namun dewa dan Jotun pernah mempunyai hubungan dan menikah.
