An autistic adult as one of our patients with carers. First time dealing with learning difficulties, and the situation was very stressed. obtained a history from mostly the carer. was concerned we hadnt considered the patients wish in an adult without capacity.
discussed the method which i dealt with the communication difficulties. and that i maybe dealt with it adequately but was still room from improvement.
communication strategy: try to talk to them on their level, and sometimes that might be trying to communicating as though with children. This includes trying to get the information from anywhere possible, so the carer/parent.
more confident in communication. I was not confident, both from the situation and the lack of knowledge of the dermatological presentation. try to focus on the communication when I wont be providing any assistance to the patient due to gaps in my learning.
more experience, i think this will help the confidence, and assist the assessment of the communication strategy i should use at the time
Communication techniques is a continual proffesional development. I think next time i experience a consultation with a specific learning, i shall try and evaluate the growth of improvement with respect to this incident.
The evaluation of my dermatology knowledge, by the end of the block, evaluate my areas of failure, and over christmas in anticipation for exams try to highlight the important areas of knowledge to allow myself to focus on the communication in this instance.
