The Connection between Humanity and Nature
Introduction
Since time immemorial, there have been things in the natural world that man associates with. In a way, human beings are likely to be associated or identified with certain things in nature. They become so dear to some places in that they tend to frequent the places and expect the place to remain untouched over time. To me, such people live in the illusion that time does not travel. They live in their memories and not the change that time brings about. One such aspect is mirrored in the two articles by Loreen Eisley, “The Brown Wasps" and E.B White's, "Once More to the Lake." The excerpt will deliberate on the author's attributes towards time, place and memories and how to give an insight into how people are defined by this three elements. The authors of the articles live in their memories and ignore the change that comes with time. This article will also discuss how Eisley came to realize that time had passed and that he was living an illusion life, so is White.
An Analysis of Eisley’s and White’s Articles on Time, Places and Memories
The authors of these two articles travel through time as they explore the natural world of humanity. Just like animals, there are a certain thing that man is attached to. Such things include certain places that symbolically ignite certain memories in their minds. For instance, Eisley's "The Brown Wasps" symbolically borrows from a certain Wasp habitat pattern and compares it to a certain behavior of some old men who were attached to a certain corner of a train station. The same way the old men clung to the station giving the police hard time to vacate them, it is precisely the same manner that Eisley observes in the Wasps. In a certain sunny day in midwinter, he observed a few old brown wasps creeping over an abandoned wasp nest in a thicket (Eisley 1).
Similarly, White has made it a custom to camping near a certain lake in Maine. Besides him currently living beside a sea, but the tides and waves for visiting a lake in the wood during summers are knocking hard (White 1). He finally succumbs to this craving and sets off along with his son just like the old days when he went camping to Maine. This, in essence, shows how man identifies with certain places.
The world is dynamic and the times are changing first. But many may choose to hang on the beauty that today brought to reflect on yesterday. Eisley says, "We cling to a time and place because without them man is lost, not only man but life." This, in essence, means that life in a way is best lived when it is an illusion, as there are those who believe in the beauty of their past and that is what motivates them to achieve their goals in life. The encounter with a young boy beside him awakens Eisley from the dreams of his illusion tree. He realizes that time has passed and that has been living in memories. He says that the attachment of the spirit of a grouping of events in time was part of our mortality.
White, on the other hand, regret that the summers at the lake in Maine have changed. He denotes that the old summers were infinitely precious and worth saving. He misses the arriving at the beginning of August, and he complains about the use of trucks on arrival with trucks (White 3). The only difference is that Eisley seems to embrace the changes in time but Whit in a way is reeling from the past, and he stuck in the memories and the beauty that the past offered.
About memory, it is clear that some people live their memories and not actually what nature offers. Eisley, for example, holds on to the memories of the tree he planted with his father 60 years ago at Nebraska his home not forgetting that the tree perished the first year (Eisley 4). But on the contrary, when White rushes over the memories, he realizes that the afternoon rains have changed that pattern of the waves in the lake, and for once he is paranoid by the fact that his son is joining in the rain swimming (White 5).
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is clear from the two authors that human beings are defined in a way by nature regarding time and place. There are some things that are so dear to them that even when nature takes them away from them, they regurgitate them in their memories. Most people thrive in the beauty of their memories, but it is high time that they need to appreciate the world is dynamic and the times are changing just like both White and Eisley realized. Hence, there is need to appreciate this changes and sail in the same line.
