I. Числительное один.
— How much time do you have? — I just have one day. =>
— Сколько у тебя времени? — Всего один день.
2. Существительное единица. Может ставиться во множественном числе:
a row of ones => ряд единиц
3. Слово-заменитель существительного. Может ставиться во множественном числе / с артиклем / в притяжательном падеже. Используется в тех случаях, когда нет необходимости повторять существительное еще раз (характерно для разговорной речи):
I've got lots of books. The best of them are the ones on the left. => У меня множество книг. Самые лучшие (книги) те, что стоят слева.
I have not a pen. Can you lend me one? => У меня нет ручки. Ты можешь мне одолжить (ручку)?
4. Используется в предложении в качестве искусственно вводимого подлежащего при переводе на английский язык русских предложений (часто с модальными словами), где нет подлежащего, но легко угадывается, что описываемая в таком предложении ситуация относится к любому человеку:
Здесь можно найти все, что угодно. => One can find anything here.
Учиться нужно хорошо. => One must study well.
В этом помещении нельзя оставлять вещи. => One should not leave things in this room.
Никому не нравится, если / когда в его словах сомневаются. => One doesn't like to have one's word doubted.
5. В сочетании со словом day и с названиями частей суток (без артикля) переводится однажды:
one day / morning / afternoon / evening / night => однажды / однажды утром / днем /вечером / ночью
6. Может использоваться перед именами и фамилиями в значении некий / некто:
One (Mr.) Fox called you. => Вам звонил некий / некто (господин) Фокс.
