Title: Depression, anxiety, and smartphone addiction in university students- A cross sectional study Authors: Jocelyne Matar Boumosleh, Doris Jaalouk Journal: PLOS One Publication date: 4th of August, 2017 Smartphone addiction is a rapidly growing problem in the 21st century and a topic which is often not given the attention it deserves. Many students suffer from decreased scholastic performance due to their overuse which not only impairs mental thought process but is very detrimental to the overall health. Moreover, users suffering from anxiety and depression find an escape in using the internet and social media, which more often than not simply leads to even further depression as students tend to make comparisons between their lifestyle and that of others which is not always representative of the reality. The study aims to assess prevalence of smartphone addiction symptoms, and to ascertain whether depression or anxiety, independently, contributes to smartphone addiction level. 688 undergraduate students were enrolled and asked to complete a questionnaire that assessed factors such as socio-demographics, lifestyle, personality type and smartphone use. Prevalence rates of smartphone-related compulsive behavior, functional impairment, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms were substantial. 35.9% felt tired during daytime due to late-night smart phone use, 38.1% acknowledged decreased sleep quality, and 35.8% slept less than four hours due to smart phone use more than once. It is likely that young adults with personality type A experiencing high stress level and low mood may lack positive stress coping mechanisms and mood management techniques and are thus highly susceptible to smart phone addiction. I believe more awareness and campaigns need to be raised amongst the age group as well as refer them to counseling to better help them cope.
