Cuando el ejército avanzaba cerca de Pica, huyó la joven seguida por su padre y otros servidores, al bosque de Tamarugos, hoy llamado Pampa del Tamarugal.
Durante cuatro años trataron de defender la causa de su Nación. Ñusta fue temida por sus enemigos y conocida con el nombre de la bella “Tirana del Tamarugal” Un día llegó prisionero ante la joven un extranjero que dijo llamarse Vasco de Almeyda.
El destino quiso que ambos se enamoraran y el español la convenció para que se bautizara. Ella accedió y en los momentos en que Almeyda bautizaba a la joven, sus seguidores se sintieron traicionados y dispararon sus flechas sobre ellos. Años más tarde el evangelizador de Tarapacá encontró en el claro del bosque del Tamarugal una cruz cristiana, y en el mismo sitio levantó una iglesia que se ha conservado hasta nuestros días con el nombre de “Nuestra Señora del Carmen de la Tirana de Tarapacá”.
