Heading to a job for a new integrator and during my "Kick off call " with the project manager I asked about the team or the "resources" we have available to us on-site.
Ive been called in as the Programmer but its clear to me that the project will need a helping hand with some of the room configuration, probably some DSP stuff and probably some assistance with networking and firmwaring of equipment.
One of the install team is on the "Programmer Track" I meet this guy and we work together on a number of tasks throughout the project. He is keen and eager to learn but in-experianced for the moment! In a quiet moment I ask the question whats the "Programmer Track" he explains to me that he does DSP manufacturer training for a year and then Crestron for the following year.
When I suggested to him that what they really need is a good commissioning engineer I had to explain what that role is!
Now it varies from company to company but for me a commisioning engineer is the person who configures the room equipment to achieve its basic aims without a control interface.
This for me is a fundamental step in delivering a technical solution.
In a multifunctional room there will be many tasks to verify and many varients of these tasks.

Test all the Audio and Video routing from source to sink.
Audio Conference:
Test the dialer capabilities and configure the room microphones, AEC and Room Audio.
Video Conference:
Test the dialer capabilities and configure the room microphones, AEC, Room Audio and Video including camera.
If a control system is in place or has been pre-programmed for the system then it might also be the task of the commissioning engineer to verify the setup of the control devices.
for e.g. Setting the correct baud rates for Serial Devices, setting IP Information on devices with TCP control.
Test and commissioning comes later once the control system layer has been placed on-top of a working room.
