In the novel, "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger, Holden faces a man vs. man conflict. Before Stradlater goes on his date with Jane Gallagher, he asks Holden for some tips on what to do and all that kind of stuff. Holden tells him about the time he used to play checkers with her. "I used to play checkers with her all the time...She wouldn't move any of her kings."(pg. 31). Stradlater's reaction to this is, he is extremely shocked at how "nerdy" Holden was with her. That shows that the conflict between Holden and Stradlater was only pure horseplay because when Stradlater made fun of him, Holden did not take it seriously. As well as the conflict between Holden and Stradlater, this also shows the amount of affection that Holden has towards Jane. Another example is when Stradlater gets back from his date. As soon as he gets back him and Holden get into an argument over what they did, "What'd you do? Give her the time in Ed Banky's goddam car?"(pg. 43) Stradlater responds with a more violent tone, "Now, shut up, Holden, God damn it-I'm warning ya. If you dont shut up,m I'm gonna slam ya one."(pg. 44) This quote shows how from just horsing around, it evolved into a full fight between the both of them within a matter of seconds. The third conflict between them is when Stradlater first gets back and sees that Holden had finished writing his composition for him. Instead of thanking him Stradlater's response was more like this, "For Chrissake, Holden. This is about a goddam baseball glove."(pg. 41) This makes Holden unhappy and regrets every helping him with his composition in the first place. So he goes over to Stradlater, rips it up, and begins writing a new one. So by the end of this chapter you are able to witness a change in anger or tension between Holden and Stradlater due to, two primary conflicts. First the baseball glove, and second is, Stradlater's date with Jean Gallagher.
