the first poster for the film Dr.No shows everything we expect from a James bond film, his gun, the women and the very 6s feel to it. The poster symbolises the 'myth' of James bond that he is known for- sauve ,sophisticated. These are what he's known for and could be recognised around the world.

South america- Rugged
Uk- Smart with a suit
However were all still illustrated rather than photographed as there was no photoshop to edit and then airbrushing was too expensive and time consuming.
Modern posters are still treated, but a lot subtler than illustrated film posters, helping to collapse spaces in time. illustrations in photographs would look ridiculous as the things happening are so staged, you can get away with a lot more than say with a photograph.
The poster for octopussy was the first mixed James bond poster using both illustrations and photographs making the real photos seem ridiculous compared to illustrations. Aesthetics are all different, illustration = perfect photography = realism, ruining the drama and mystic.
after goldeneye, it was seen photos changing to be more dramatic much like illustrations but in the form of photography, showing what happens in the film. Almost a illustration out of photographs.
Finally Casino royale changed the poster back to set a distant from the old film series starting something new for James bond working very well becoming a lot more mysterious, which can only work with a photograph as a illustration couldn't capture the darkness of James bond that its become.
Photography and illustration can both be good and bad depending on how its used through its context. illustration was functioned through a purpose like it should, such as photography did. Think about how can i use my skills to form a mystique about it trying not to remind them of the opposite style.
