(61) He lies becasue he is embarrassed of hiself that he got kicked out of Pencey Prep school, and deception. He deceives Ernests mother on the train, he lies to her because he is very conscientious and possibly ashamed of being kicked out of Pencey Prep. IF he mentions that she is a very pleasant woman with her " sex appeal" and her "nice telephone voice" she is clearly a pleasnt woman so naturally he feels he needs to be just a presentable, maybe he wants to bridge some sort of social gap? he wants to seem more accepted and more mature this way, by lying to her by saying that he still attends hei s trying to make himself more accepted. Aso lies to spare her feelings about her son ernest. He admits that ernest is "about as sensitive as a god damn toilet seat" he feels sympathetic at some points during the conversation when he says "I like Old Morrows mother"(62) "she was alright" he is willing to lie to spare her feelings and ease her worries, because at the end of the day this characterizes himself as caring even though he tries to maintain the fascade as a tough boy, he tries to appear relatable and sympathetic to others. CONTRIBUTION: i=his lying contributes to the overall theme of coming to age because this instance demonstates that holden is becoming more aware of the feelings of not just morrow but his parents - Adults. He is understanding the feelings of others.. Holden is coming aware of the feelings his mother must have.

he is always critisizing others and chastizing others when he himself calls himself the most terrific liar
talks about phonies at school which demostatrates how judgement he is towards them, he finds them repulsive and disgusting/abhorant yet he himself admits to being the "most terrific liar" within the same paragraph he says he lied to old spencer that he kept the equipment in the gym. so thourghout the novel he is constantly pretending to be someone he is not,hypocritical, he thinks lying is repulsive when he himself lies.

he know what is morally correct yet he is not able to achieve becaue he is not at that level, so perhaps he lies to himself becuase he wants to make himself feel superior thinks that he aroniously belives that he "doesnt lie" he feels superior to hem and thinks that he is more mature. Whichsi the opposite of maturity. maturity the acceptance of your mistakes and flaws, contributes to the theme that he wants to be mature, yet he has not accepted things. he aronioulsy believes that he has to act and be better than others. contradiction on one hand he is repulsed by and part of it himself. he aroniously believes that that is what makes him more adult. he feels confidence and solice in his smugness, becuase many times he feels lonely, so he must feel some solice and smugness to feel good about himself.pattings his own ego. which is funny taht he fels comfort in his own lies that others also maybe doing the same thing, on how others put up their fascade as well.
